Marauders Dismantle Goldey-Beacom to Close Out 2014

Millersville, Pa. - The Millersville women's basketball team opened Wednesday's game against Goldey-Beacom on a 13-0 run and didn't look back as it held the opponent to just 38 points and 18.2 percent (12-of-66) shooting from the field in a 71-38 rout of the Lightning.
The Marauders (8-4) have won five of their last six, improved to 5-0 at home this season and have taken all five games against Goldey-Beacom in the all-time series. Meanwhile, the Lightning (4-10) have lost two in a row and three of their last five. This 33-point victory marked the most lopsided win for Millersville since Nov. 17, 2012 when it defeated Wilmington by 38 points, 94-56.
The Marauders recorded several other season-bests on New Year's Eve including least points allowed (38), 3-pointers made (11-for-23), 3-point field goal percentage (47.8), defensive rebounds (46), total rebounds (60), and lowest opponent field goal percentage (18.2). Those are the least points allowed since March 2, 2013, most triples made since Dec. 1, 2012, most defensive rebounds in a game since at least the beginning of the 2002-03 season, and most total rebounds in a game since Nov. 17, 2012. Also, no team has shot that poorly against the Marauders since Mansfield shot 17 percent from the field on Jan. 31, 2009.
Sabina Mehmedovic and Tyisha White each had 11 points to lead Millersville and scoring, which tied a career-high for Mehmedovic and was a new personal-best for White. Alexis Martin earned the fifth double double of her career and second of the season with 10 points and 12 boards while Yasmin Cooper was one point shy of the double double along with her game-high 17 boards. Behind those four, Alex Stam and Shelby Reimer eached turned in eight-point performances. After missing the second half due to injury, Carly Gallagher failed to score in double figures for the first time since Feb. 19 of last season against Cheyney.
The Marauders scored the first 13 points of the game and made five of their first nine field goal attempts while Goldey-Beacom was 0-of-7 to start from the floor. Millersville pushed its lead out to 17, 19-2, and continued to keep the pressure on leading by as many as 21, 37-16, in the first half. The home team headed into the intermission with a 16-point lead, 37-21, and shot 45.2 percent (14-for-31) from the field in the first 20 minutes. The closest the guests could get in the second half was 14, 39-25, but the margin was as big as 33 with 20 seconds to play as it was in the final score.
The Marauders dominated in bench scoring (33-6), points in the paint (28-12), rebounds (60-34), and assists (15-3).
Millersville will return to PSAC action on Saturday and Sunday with 1 p.m. games against Gannon and Clarion, respectively.
