Fighting Scots Use Second Half Run to Down Marauders

Edinboro, Pa. - Edinboro led by as many as 16 in the second half and the deficit was too much to overcome as the Millersville women's basketball team fell to the Fighting Scots on the road by a score of 65-58.
The Marauders' (6-4, 4-2 PSAC) three-game win streak was snapped while Edinboro (7-3, 4-2 PSAC) won its fourth-straight game for the first time this season. The Fighting Scots now lead the all-time series 10-9, have won five straight between the two teams as well as nine of the last 11.
With 7:33 to play in the game, Edinboro held its biggest lead of the game of 16, 56-40. Millersville wasn't done though and over the next 3:52, outscored its hosts 13-2 to pull within five, 58-53. During that fury, Carly Gallagher tallied five points while both Sabina Mehmedovic and Aunjel Van Brakle each added four more apiece. The Fighting Scots then scored four straight and the deficit was back to nine, 62-53, with 2:10 on the clock. From that point on, the margin was five at its smallest, 63-58, and Edinboro held on for the seven-point victory.
The home team opened the game on a 7-2 run in the first minute and 43 seconds before the visitors answered with a 10-2 fury of its own to capture a 12-9 advantage. During that span of 4:42, the Marauders were a perfect 5-of-5 from the field and five of those points came from Shelby Reimer. In the nine minutes and 51 seconds that followed, the Fighting Scots doubled Millersville in points, 16-8, and were up five, 25-20, with just 3:44 to play until halftime. After a Mehmedovic jumper and a pair of Edinboro free throws, Van Brakle drained a triple to cut the deficit back to two, 27-25. However, Maggie Moore converted a layup to push the home team's lead back to four, 29-25, heading into halftime.
The Marauders dominated in bench scoring to the tune of 33-13 and a big reason for that was Van Brakle who turned in a career-high 12 points on 4-of-8 shooting including 1-for-3 from behind the arc and 3-of-6 at the free throw line. The Shippensburg native was also one rebound shy of earning her second career double-double and blocked two shots in just 21 minutes of action. Gallagher's steak of games in double figures continued as she had 10 to go with six boards, two assists and one steal. Millersville also controlled scoring in the paint 30-22.
Tyisha White (eight points) and Courtney Hinnant (seven points) each had career highs in points.
Neither team shot well as the Marauders were 21-for-61 from the floor (34.4 percent) and the Fighting Scots weren't much better at 22-of-57 (38.6 percent). However, Edinboro's 3-point shooting came to life in the second half and the Fighting Scots made six of their 14 attempts (42.9 percent) from deep in the second 20 minutes.
Millersville will play four of its next six games at home with the first coming against Mercyhurst on Saturday. Tip against the Lakers is set for 1 p.m. inside Pucillo Gymnasium.
