Erin Harman Steps Up as Millersville Volleyball Defeats Kutztown

Millersville, Pa. - Led by freshman Erin Harman, the Millersville volleyball team defeated Kutztown in four sets on Saturday afternoon inside Pucillo Gymnasium.
The Marauders (9-8, 3-6 PSAC) rolled past the Golden Bears (9-7, 3-6 PSAC) with set scores of 26-24, 22-25, 25-16, and 25-21 thanks in part to newcomer Harman. The Hanover, Pa. native has shined bright all season and Saturday was nothing different. She led the team in kills with 19 to go with 20 assists, 16 digs and three block assists, all of which tied or became new career highs for the outside hitter. Those 19 kills went with just six errors on 51 swings for a blistering hitting percentage of .255.
Kutztown controlled the beginning of the opening set and was up 13-6 before Millersville called a timeout to talk things over.Out of the breather, the Golden Bears pushed their lead to nine and backed the Marauders into a corner but they came out swinging. Millersville scored six straight points to cut the deficit to two, 21-19, and the visitors called a timeout of their own. After that, the hosts reeled off seven of the final 10 points to take the set, 26-24.
The second set was the closest one of the match that saw eight ties and four lead changes. The scoring went back and forth before Kutztown was able to score three of four points at the end and took the set to tie the match up at one set apiece. The Golden Bears' best offensive set of the day came in that stanza as they hit .263 with 14 kills to four errors on 38 swings.
To begin the third set, the two teams tied four times in the first 16 points scored. From that point on though, it was all Millersville as they closed the set on a 17-8 run and took the set to take a two sets to one lead. That marked the Marauders' best set of the day as they hit .290 with 13 kills and four errors on 31 total attacks.
Kutztown opened the fourth set leading 10-5 and forced Millersville head coach Brian Smith to call a timeout. The timeout was just what the doctor ordered as the Marauders came out of it on a 17-7 run and were up 22-17. The Golden Bears cut it to two, 23-21, but Millersville scored the final two points after that to take the set and the match three sets to one.
After Harman, three Marauders sent home double-digit kills including Mary Paul (11), Kayla Wallace (10) and Katie Lesinski (10) while Victoria Biggins led the squad in assists with 30. Defensively, a quartet of Marauders dug out double-figure balls including Brooklyn Smith (24), Taylor Smith (22), Harman (16), and Biggins (11). Above the net, Paul tallied one solo block and four assisted.
Next up for Millersville is its second PSAC crossover on Oct. 10 and 11. The first two matches of that event will be against Mercyhurst (2 p.m.) and Edinboro (7:30 p.m.).
