MILLERSVILLE, Pa. — The Millersville University volleyball team lost to Georgian Court 3-1 (17-25, 22-25, 25-21, 22-25) on Monday. The Marauders' set win came in the third, when they rallied from a 21-19 deficit to take the set 25-21.
Georgian Court held advantages in hitting percentage (.161 to .122), kills (48 to 43), service aces (12 to 0) and total blocks (9 to 6), while the Marauders finished with a 76-71 edge in digs. The Marauders' 43 kills were above their season average of 32.57. 'Ville's strongest supported surge came in the third set, when it erased a 21-19 deficit with six straight points to finish the set, and Sidonia Cecco added 24 digs to support the team's defensive total.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Marauders battled back from an 8-4 deficit in the first set, scoring four straight points and tying it at 8-8 on Alex Nava's kill from Cecco. Georgian Court later created separation, moving from a 16-14 edge to a 23-15 advantage. Hailey Lazur added a kill after Georgian Court reached 24-16, but 'Ville dropped the set 25-17.
'Ville's main push in the second set came after a 16-11 deficit, as Nava put down a kill and then served during a four-point stretch that pulled the Marauders even at 16-16. The run included Georgian Court errors, a Sam White kill and Marissa Storti's kill from Addison Reustle, but Georgian Court answered with four straight points for a 20-16 lead. The Marauders later closed to 23-21 and got a Lazur block before Georgian Court finished the set 25-22.
The Marauders closed the third set by erasing a 21-19 deficit with six straight points, starting with Lazur's kill from Julia Chunta and continuing through five points on Storti's serve. Storti and Lazur added kills during the run, and 'Ville finished the set at 25-21 on back-to-back blocks by Lazur and Nadia Sawyer.
A late push in the fourth set brought the Marauders from down 23-15 to within 23-21 behind Storti's serving, a Lazur block and two Lazur kills. Earlier, Georgian Court had put 'Ville in a 12-2 hole with service pressure and blocks, forcing the Marauders to spend much of the set chasing. Georgian Court stopped the run with Ava Churnesky's kill and finished the set 25-22.
"The team talked about it [energy] themselves," said head coach Brian Smith. "They felt that the energy was low at the beginning. It's tough going through two five-set matches on Thursday and Saturday. It's physically and emotionally draining. As coaches, we don't want to be the ones brining in the energy and the effort, and we wanted them to work through that. I got more animated during one of the timeouts in the fourth set, and they worked through it... They finished in the end though and if we would have brought that energy to the beginning, it would have been a different match... They definitely had a better last two sets. "
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
Cecco collected a team-high 24 digs. Reustle finished with a team-leading 25 set assists, exceeding a season average of 15.43, and added nine digs. Lazur posted nine kills while hitting .389 and added four blocks, including three solo blocks. Nava led the Marauders with 11 kills and added 10 digs.
