MILLERSVILLE, Pa. — Millersville University volleyball team thrilled fans with a hard-fought 3-2 victory over Jefferson (23-25, 25-22, 21-25, 25-18, 17-15) on Thursday. In the fourth set, the Marauders used an impressive 8-0 run to surge from a 13-10 deficit to an 18-13 lead, forcing the deciding set. This was the Marauders' first five-set match.
The Marauders finished strong in the fifth set by overcoming a 14-13 deficit to secure a 17-15 win. The Marauders held a 15-4 advantage in service aces, including six from Amanda Protzman, while committing seven service errors to Jefferson's six. Despite Jefferson finishing with more kills, digs, total blocks, and a slightly higher hitting percentage, 'Ville's serving and late fifth-set finish were key in the closely contested match.
HOW IT HAPPENED

After Jefferson moved ahead late, 'Ville fought back from a 23-21 deficit with a Storti kill and a Sawyer block to tie the set at 23-23. However, Jefferson secured the next two points, handing the Marauders a 25-23 first-set loss.
In a tightly contested second set tied at 15-15, 'Ville won seven of the next eight rallies to lead 22-16, highlighted by four consecutive points on Sidonia Cecco's serve. Jefferson responded with six straight points to close in at 23-22, but the Marauders reached set point on a Lazur block and clinched the set, 25-22, with a Sawyer kill from Julia Chunta.
The Marauders stayed within reach in the third set, moving ahead 21-20 after a Jefferson attack error. However, Jefferson answered with the final five points, closing the set with three kills and a 'Ville attack error. Nava contributed several kills to keep the Marauders in contention, but Jefferson took the set 25-21.
A 13-10 fourth-set deficit turned into an 18-13 lead for the Marauders with eight straight points, the last seven coming on Protzman's serve. The run featured a Sawyer kill from Chunta and back-to-back Protzman aces to make it 18-13. The Marauders finished off the set 25-18, with Storti adding two late kills before Nava ended it from Chunta.
In the fifth set, 'Ville responded to a 14-13 deficit by capturing four of the final five points to win it 17-15. Sawyer tied the set with a kill from Chunta, and Nava supplied three late kills, including the final two points after Jefferson evened it at 15-15.
"It was fun yet difficult to watch from Puerto Rico. It was fun because of the fight and energy I felt watching," said head coach Brian Smith. "It's always good for a team to fight hard when facing adversity, and to seal a 5th set victory over a team that swept them in the opening match of the season, had to feel really good."
