MILLERSVILLE, Pa. — The Millersville University volleyball team defeated Lackawanna 3-0 on Friday, taking the sets 25-14, 25-23 and 25-16. The Marauders finished with 34 kills and a .212 hitting percentage while holding Lackawanna to 23 kills and a .032 percentage. The .212 mark exceeded the Marauders' season average of .080.

Lackawanna had 20 attack errors, while the Marauders recorded nine service aces to Lackawanna's two, including four from Amanda Protzman, though 'Ville committed 13 service errors compared with seven for Lackawanna. The Marauders' nine service aces surpassed their season average of 5.38. In the second set, the Marauders came back from a six-point deficit and later won five of six rallies from a 10-10 tie to take a 15-11 lead before converting set point at 25-23.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Marauders created separation in the first set by winning seven of eight rallies, turning a 12-8 lead into a 19-9 advantage. Protzman served two aces during that stretch, while Hailey Lazur, Nadia Sawyer, Addison Reustle and Alex Nava added kills. Sam White was credited on two late blocks, and Sidonia Cecco served an ace to finish the set, 25-14.

After a 6-0 start by Lackawanna, 'Ville moved in front during a mid-set surge, turning an 11-11 tie into a 15-11 lead behind a Lazur kill, two Marissa Storti service aces and a White kill from Julia Chunta. Earlier, Storti, Protzman, Charlee Russick and Marin Esch helped pull the set back to 10-10 with kills as the Marauders erased the early gap. 'Ville held off Lackawanna late and finished the second set 25-23 on a Lackawanna service error.

The Marauders created early separation in the third set, moving ahead 11-4 after service aces by Nava, Protzman and Storti. Russick added three kills and teamed with Protzman on a block as 'Ville kept control of the set. Reustle and Protzman delivered late kills before the Marauders finished the set 25-16.

"I thought all night we struggled with our own inconsistencies." said head coach Brian Smith. "I remember in the first set, we had a lot of errors and they [Lackawanna] had one earned point. In the second set we got down 5-0, called a timeout, told them to reset, go out there and keep playing. They settled down and tied the set eventually at 10 points. It was a lot about getting people playing time as well, we used all our right sides and outsides in all three sets, moving Sam White around, and getting our middles rotating."

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

Storti led 'Ville with seven kills and 10 points, adding three service aces and five digs. Her three service aces surpassed her season average of 0.88. Protzman recorded four kills on a .500 hitting percentage, served four aces and added a block assist. Her four service aces exceeded her season average of 1.25. Reustle finished with 17 assists and added three kills. Lazur recorded two blocks and has reached 25 blocks this season. Cecco collected a team-high 13 digs and added one service ace. She has reached 100 digs for the season.

UP NEXT

Up next, the Marauders travel to Kutztown, Pa., to face Kutztown on Saturday, Oct. 10, at 5 p.m.

"We played Kutztown once and we felt we played two out of the three sets well. I think the matches like this [tonight] are building towards tomorrow and we were definitely looking ahead. We've had some really good practices, and we've been working on some new stuff, and the team feels they are matched well for Kutztown tomorrow." said Smith.
