Millersville, Pa. – The Millersville women's basketball team held on for a 65-64 victory over Kutztown Wednesday night despite a late 21-11 run by the Golden Bears.
The Marauders (9-6, 4-1 PSAC East) outscored Kutztown (6-9, 3-2 PSAC East) 38-22 in the paint, 34-22 off turnovers and 16-6 in fast break points. Millersville has won 16 straight against the Golden Bears inside Pucillo Gymnasium and 25 of the last 27 between the two teams.
The hosts led 56-46 with just over six minutes to play in the second half before the visitors used a 12-1 run to go up, 58-57. That marked Kutztown's first lead since 29-28 with 16:23 to play in the second half.
A layup from Alexis Martin halted the run and four straight free throws by Carly Gallagher pushed the Marauders' lead back to five, 63-58. The Golden Bears were able to cut the margin to 65-64 with six seconds to play but a last second heave from Natalya Lee came up short as Millersville held on for the win.
Gallagher led all scorers with 18 points to go with seven rebounds, a career-high five steals and four assists. Celeste Robinson, the defending PSAC East Athlete of the Week, continued her stellar play with 17 points on 7-of-12 shooting and five steals. The Kregsville, Pa. native has averaged nearly 20 points per game in her last four and has shot 69.4 percent (34-of-49) from the field during that stretch.
