Millersville, Pa. – Needing a crucial win over Mansfield at home heading into Wednesday's showdown with first-place Bloomsburg, the Marauders rebounded from a loss at Shippensburg last Wednesday, beating the Mountaineers 75-49. Mashira Newman flirted with a triple-double, posting 14 points, 10 assists and eight rebounds to go along with four steals.
The redshirt senior point guard's double-double is the fifth of her career and the first in which she has hit double digit points and assists in the same game. The win pushes the Marauders to 13-6, 10-5 in PSAC play and drops the Mounties to 4-15 (2-13 PSAC). Wednesday's game between Millersville and Bloom will a battle for first place in the PSAC East, as the Marauders trail the Huskies by one game in the standings.
Fellow redshirt senior Aurielle Mosley gave Newman frontcourt help, hitting for 14 points on 5-of-7 shooting and pulling down seven rebounds. The reigning PSAC East Player of the Week, Mosley also blocked two shots, adding a steal and an assist in just 23 minutes. It was the fewest minutes Mosley had played since being on the court for just 17 in a Jan. 16 win over Cheyney. Mosley and Newman were the only two players in double figures.
The Marauders led wire-to-wire, claiming a 6-0 lead out of the gate. After the Mountaineers pulled within 8-5, Millersville went on a 22-8 run to balloon its lead to 30-13 and a first half-high 17-point advantage. Newman (7) and Mosley (8) combined for 15 of the 22 points in that sprint, and the Marauders took a 34-24 lead into the break.
Coming out of the locker rooms, Mansfield claimed the first three points of the second half, cutting the deficit to seven. That was the last three points Mansfield got for the next 5:26, as the Mountaineers watched the Marauders go on a 15-0 run featuring six points from senior forward Miesha Cousins and four each from Newman and junior forward Alexis Martin. Cousins finished with nine points and four rebounds, and Martin posted six points and four rebounds.
Millersville's defense was key in the victory, limiting the Mounties to 34.6 percent shooting and forcing 33 turnovers. The Marauders managed 18 steals and blocked six shots. The live-ball turnovers doomed Mansfield, as Millersville turned the 33 turnovers into 35 points.
On the flipside, the Marauders kept their turnovers down to just 14 and limited the damage the Mountaineers did, holding Mansfield to just seven points off of turnovers. Courtesy of Mosley, Martin and Cousins, Millersville was also able to dominate the paint Saturday afternoon. The Marauders held a 42-20 edge in points scored in the paint.
Millersville travels to Bloomsburg Wednesday evening for a 6 p.m. tip time from Nelson Fieldhouse. The Huskies collected a 79-68 victory over Kutztown Saturday to remain one game up on the Marauders. The road team Wednesday, Millersville does have a game in hand on Bloom thanks to a 62-55 win over the Huskies at Pucillo Gymnasium on Dec. 8, 2012. In that game, the Marauders limited the Huskies to 31.7 percent shooting as Mosley and Cousins both posted double-doubles.
