Millersville, Pa. – A 16-point halftime deficit was too of steep a hill for the Millersville women's basketball team to climb as it fell to rival West Chester 91-83 Wednesday night in Pucillo Gymnasium.
Dallas Ely scored a game-high 29 points to lead the Golden Rams (5-2, 3-0 PSAC East) to their fourth consecutive win while the Marauders (3-3, 1-1 PSAC East) have now lost two straight and three of their last four.
Yasmin Cooper registered her third double-double of the season with 18 points and 12 rebounds while Celeste Robinson earned the second of her career on 15 points and 12 boards.
Senada Mehmedovic was 4-of-9 from behind the arc as she tallied a season-high 18 points to go with two assists, two rebounds and one steal. The team's lone senior has scored 60 points in her last three games against West Chester. Carly Gallagher sent home 15 points as the fourth Marauder in double-figures before she fouled out late in the second period.
Millersville trailed its visitors 81-71 with 5:15 to play in the second half. The Marauders then went on a 10-4 run to cut the margin to 85-81, the smallest it had been since the 18:09 mark in the first half. Robinson started the run with a pair of free throws, Shelby Reimer sent home a trey, and Senada Mehmedovic scored five of her 10 second half points, which forced a timeout by West Chester.
Out of the timeout, Ely had the ball at the top of the key, drove down the right side of the line and converted a layup in traffic to give the Golden Rams a six-point advantage, 87-81. After that, the lead was never smaller than six as West Chester held on to the 91-83 victory.
The game was decided in the first half, though, as the Golden Rams opened the game on a 23-9 run and enjoyed a lead of 18 points on three separate occasions en route to a 51-35 halftime lead.
Millersville will look to end its two-game skid against East Stroudsburg on Saturday with tip-off set for 1 p.m.
