Marauders Roll to Record Ninth Consecutive Win

Millersville, Pa. - The No. 2-ranked Millersville field hockey steamrolled its way to a 4-0 win over Mercyhurst and into the school record books Wednesday by tying records for consecutive wins and the best start in school history.

Sarah Bomberger scored twice and Champayne Hess and Samantha Ruane scored off of assists from Alicia Youtz. Emily Litchford and Ruane helped on Bomberger's two goals as the Marauders' boosted their record to a spotless 9-0 and improved to 4-0 in the PSAC.

The nine consecutive wins hadn't been accomplished since the 1973 club started 9-0. The Marauders scored the record-tying win in convincing fashion, out-shooting the Lakers (4-6, 0-3 PSAC) 20-4 and holding a 19-3 edge in penalty corners. The Marauders forced Laker keeper Jess Wess to make nine saves in the first half alone.

At the opposite end of the field, Lauren Sotzin turned away two shots for her third consecutive shutout and sixth of the season. The Marauders have not surrendered a goal in 257 minutes of play and have allowed only one goal in the last five games.

Millersville went on the attack immediately, placing five shots on goal in the first two minutes. At the 1:56 mark, Youtz delivered a pass from the right wing to the center of the circle, and Ruane lifted the ball high over Wess' head for the first score of the game.

The lead extended to two goals when Youtz found a sprinting Hess in the center of the circle. Youtz's pass was on-target and Hess quickly flipped a shot past Wess for her fourth goal of the season.

Millersville took a 2-0 lead into the break but pushed it to 3-0 only 4:46 into the period. Litchford took a shot off a penalty corner, and Bomberger, who was positioned on the left corner of the cage, redirected the ball for a score. Bomberger added her fourth goal of the season at the 56:47 mark off an assist from Ruane.

The Marauders only improved their nation's best goals-against average and has now outscored opponents 34-4.

The win sets up a monumental No. 1 vs. No. 2 match-up between Shippensburg and Millersville on Saturday. Shippensburg survived a close game with West Chester Wednesday to improve to 11-0 overall. The game, played at Shippensburg, starts at 1 p.m.
