MILLERSVILLE, Pa. — The Millersville University field hockey team narrowly lost to No. 2 Shippensburg with a score of 3-2 on Wednesday. The Marauders were efficient with their six shots, putting five on goal and scoring once in both the second and fourth quarters, while facing 21 Shippensburg shots.

"It was a better game for us, and I am pleased [with] many things," said head coach Shelly Behrens. "Way too many shots to give up to a good opponent."

Shippensburg generated more shot volume, finishing with 21 attempts and 10 on goal compared with the Marauders' six shots and five shots on goal. Millersville put five of its six shots on goal, while Katherine Hanlon recorded six saves and Peyton Bean added a defensive save.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Marauders kept Shippensburg off the board in the first quarter as Katie Hanlon made four saves and Bean added a defensive save. Millersville generated two penalty corners in quick succession, producing a Breanna Aughenbaugh shot on goal, and Zoe Angelinas later put another shot on goal. The quarter finished scoreless.

"I feel as if the team stayed together today," said Behrens. "The connectivity and ability to create chances continues to be something we want to increase for sure."

In the second quarter, Millersville responded to Shippensburg's rebound goal when Alaina Culbert scored at the far post off an assist from Megan Alvarez, tying the game at 1-1. Katie Hanlon made a save during Shippensburg's penalty-corner sequence earlier in the quarter, and the Marauders went into halftime even at 1-1.

The Marauders spent the third quarter defending Shippensburg pressure, and Hannah White scored on a tip-in from Caracotche Picone in the 41st minute to put Shippensburg in front, 2-1. Hanlon made a save on McKenna Boyle later in the quarter, but Millersville was held without a shot or penalty corner before entering the fourth down 2-1.

Millersville answered Shippensburg's fourth-quarter goal when Culbert scored off a penalty corner in the 56th minute, with Alvarez assisting, to pull the Marauders within 3-2. The Marauders kept pressing late, with Culbert forcing a save and Aughenbaugh having a shot blocked, but the fourth quarter ended with Shippensburg holding on for a 3-2 result.

"Proud of the team for earning a corner with about 39 seconds to go, and those we need to convert, but a much better performance today."

Culbert scored twice on three shots, putting all three attempts on goal. Alvarez recorded two assists. Hanlon finished with six saves in 60 minutes. Bean added a defensive save.

"Katie Hanlon had some good stops, and a shout-out to our defence: Peyton, Liv and Madi had some broken-up plays and tough defence in front of Katie," said Behrens. "Our midfield lines interchanged well and again this is a game we can build and learn from going into PSAC play."
