Marauders fall short in overtime to IUP

MILLERSVILLE, Pa. -The Millersville University women's field hockey team saw a tightly contested PSAC matchup slip away in overtime, falling 2-1 to the Crimson Hawks of Indiana University of Pennsylvania (IUP).

The Marauders were outshot 16-3 by the Crimson Hawks, but Millersville goalkeeper Katie Hanlon kept her team in the game with seven saves.

"It's learning from game to game," said head coach Shelly Behrens. "I thought today we were so much better [on defense]. I really appreciate the effort and the attitude from the team. We had a fantastic team meeting after West Chester, and this is just what this conference does. It makes us better. It'll break you or make you better, and tonight was a great and fun game to coach. The midfielders really helped the defense tonight and Hanlon in goal was lights out and we couldn't have asked for a better game."

The first half was quiet on both sides, with Millersville recording two shots to IUP's four. The game opened up in the third quarter, as both teams found offensive oppurtunities.

Millersville struck first after two pentaly corners taken from Lauren Kampi. Zoe Angelinas found the back of the net for her third goal of the season, putting the Marauders up 1-0 with more than half of the third quarter to go. IUP fought back and after two penalty corners and three shots with two saves from Hanlon, the Crimson Hawks were rewarded a penalty shot. IUP hooked one over Hanlon to tie the game at one goal a piece.

The Crimson Hawks kept the Marauders on the defensive for most of the fourth quarter, holding Millersville without a shot. With less than two minutes remaining, IUP earned a penalty corner, but Millersville's defense held firm to keep the Crimson Hawks off the scoreboard. Overtime began with the Marauders quickly breaking away and creating an early chance, but IUP forced a turnover to regain possession. Kasey Reiger then delivered the game-winning goal, securing the victory for the Crimson Hawks.

"It was a feeling out contest," said Behrens. "The energy on the bench and on the field playing was fantastic. I think it's just about finding that happy place and composure with the energy. For us, there's a lot we're going to learn from this and if we keep getting better, I'm excited to see them again."

The Marauders are back at Chryst Field Wednesday, Sept. 23 when they face No.2 Kutztown at 6 p.m.
