Mosley Breaks Blocks Record as Marauders Fend Off Lakers

Millersville, Pa. – Facing a Mercyhurst team that came in with a 2-4 record, Millersville needed a 25-10 run in the second half after leading by 27 points in the first half to secure a 68-53 victory Wednesday night at Pucillo Gymnasium.

With 6:48 left in the first half, the Marauders led by 27 points (35-8) and looked to have the game cemented early. The Lakers, however, closed the gap quickly, tying the score at 43 by the 13:30 mark of the second half. From there, the home team recaptured its first half spark and cruised to the 15-point win to up its record to 6-1 (3-1 PSAC).

In the process, senior Aurielle Mosley continued to round out her stellar career in Black & Gold, moving into the top spot in Millersville's record books for blocked shots in a career with 201. Mosley snuffed out two first half Laker shots, and contributed eight points, a game-high 12 rebounds and two steals.

Celeste Robinson tied a team-high and had a career-high 11 points on 4-for-6 shooting. The freshman also chipped in four rebounds and three steals. Robinson shared the team lead in points with Mashira Newman, who scored 11 to go along with seven rebounds, four assists and three steals.

The reverse 35-8 run made by Mercyhurst at the end of the first half and crossing over into the second stanza shortly put Millersville in jeopardy. The Marauders' late run to close the Lakers began with an and-one layup by Newman and a Robinson layup gave the home team a quick 5-0 sprint. After retaking the lead by five, Millersville never looked back, leading the rest of the way.

As much as Millersville had to fend off Mercyhurst, the Marauders did get off to a good start to the game by scoring the first seven points of the contest. The Marauders made the Lakers pay for turning the ball over in the first half as well, posting 23 points on 18 Laker errors. For the game, Millersville exploited 29 Mercyhurst turnovers, exchanging them for 32 of the Marauders' 68 points.

Another area of strength for the Marauders in the win was bench play. Millersville's second unit contributed 25 points on the night headed by Robinson's 11. The bench explosion came one night after Millersville's bench was outscored by Gannon's 24-2 in its first defeat of the season.

Millersville also shot well from deep, knocking down six triples on 12 attempts. Senada Mehmedovic had nine points on a perfect 3-for-3 effort from beyond, and her sister Sabina Mehmedovic hit for six points on 2-of-2 3-point shooting. On the other end of the court, the Marauders did what they do best in defending the 3-point shot. Millersville held the Lakers to 5-for-16 shooting from 3-point range.

The Marauders now get another long break, but are on the road for the turn of the New Year. They travel to Louisville, Ky. for the Bellarmine Tournament. At Bellarmine, Millersville plays first against the host Knights on Dec. 30 at 2 p.m. On New Year's Eve (Dec. 31), the Marauders take on Missouri S&T at 1 p.m. Millersville has never played either opponent.
