
Marauders Dominate Shepherd in Season Opener

Shepherdstown, W. Va. – Using a balanced offense that included seven players scoring, the Millersville women's lacrosse team upended Shepherd 21-5 in its season opener Thursday. The Marauders improved to 1-0 on the season, while the first-year Shepherd team fell to 0-2.
Millersville started scoring quickly, with a goal from senior Katie DiRico 2:27 into the first period. Shepherd retaliated, however, moving past goalkeeper Madison Allan one minute later to tie the contest for the first and only time.
The Marauders went on a 13-1 scoring run and headed into halftime with a 14-2 edge over the Rams. Millersville dominated the first period, out-shooting Shepherd, 25-5.
The second half mimicked the first for the Black and Gold. They scored seven more goals compared to the Rams' three. The Marauders picked up 17 ground balls and tallied 11 shots on goal.
Nicole Ruane and Cara Parks each notched two goals and Carly Jones added one for Shepherd. Goalkeeper Emily Rachel recorded six saves on the day.
Leading the Marauders in scoring was sophomore Brittney Long, who registered a career-high six goals. Senior Liz Weekley scored four goals, junior Morgan Mangiaruga nabbed three, and DiRico and freshman Ashley Henderson recorded two goals.
Kelsey Schmoltze and Ashley Mogle also notched one goal apiece, and Allan set aside nine shots in the net.
This game marked only the second game Shepherd has played since becoming a varsity sport earlier this year.
The Marauders continue their five-game road stretch in Winter Park, Fla. with games against Rollins on March 8 and Stonehill on March 12.
