Millersville, Pa. – In her 21 year tenure with the Millersville women's basketball program, head coach Mary Fleig has guided her club to unprecedented success. Fittingly, Fleig added to her accomplishments on her home court Thursday afternoon by picking up her 500th career victory and 378th at Millersville when the 17th-ranked Marauders defeated Merrimack 75-59.
Fleig, who is the current owner of the 10th most wins amongst active coaches in Division II, became just the 15th coach in the division to reach the 500 victory milestone.
“It's over,” Fleig said. “I didn't feel any pressure because I knew it was going to happen. I was happy with the way our kids played and they really wanted to get it here.”
Millersville (7-1) left little doubt that today would be the day as it produced its best offensive half of the year, registering a season-high 45 points and holding the Warriors (4-5) to a season-low 23 points in the first half.
“Everybody knew today could be our 500th,” said Fleig. “But I told them to just play to the best of their ability and we'll see what happens.”
Fleig received career performances from sophomore forward Aurielle Mosley and junior guard Sophia Waters, both of whom produced double-doubles. Mosley boasted a career-high 26 points to go along with her 11 rebounds, and Waters scored 11 points and recorded a career-high 10 boards.
“This is a huge win for coach,” said senior Domonique Stroman, the team's lone senior. “She's been working so hard and I'm excited we could get this for her today.”
Stroman, who had nine rebounds, and sophomore guard Mashira Newman aided Millersville's cause. Newman recorded a career-high four 3-pointers to add to her 18 points on the day and also nabbed a game-high five steals.
“This just shows how far hard work and determination will take you,” Stroman said. “Teamwork can get you 500 wins and we got that for Coach Fleig today.”
The Marauders virtually secured the victory with an impressive 18-1 run in the first half, and even took a 24-point lead with just under a minute remaining in the half. Mosley already recorded a double-double heading into the break.
The squad limited Merrimack to a 33.3 shooting percentage and forced nine turnovers in the first period. The Marauders also held the Warriors' leading scorer Kelly Schatzlein to just six points.
Millersville returns to action in the New Year with conference crossover action. The Marauders take on Gannon on Monday, Jan. 3 at 5:30 p.m. before heading to Clarion on Jan. 4 for a 6 p.m. match up.
