Millersville, Pa. - The Millersville University women's basketball team opened its 2008-09 campaign with a record-setting victory over visiting Columbia Union Saturday evening, defeating the Pioneers by a final score of 101-30 at the annual MU Tipoff Classic at Pucillo Gymnasium.
Millersville was led by guard Ashley Moyer who finished with a career-high 18 points on 6-of-7 shooting from the field, including 3-of-4 from long range. Raquel Green chipped in with 14 points while Jenna Craig and Sophia Waters were the other two Marauders in double-figures with 11 and 10, respectively.
Millersville began the game with a 19-0 run that lasted over seven and a half minutes. A three-point basket by Moyer and back-to-back three-point baskets by Jenna Philo started the scoring for the Marauders.
Millersville held Columbia Union without a field goal until midway through the first half when guard Erin Duffie sank a jumper at the 10:06 mark that made the score 30-4 in favor of the home team.
Millersville used a balanced attack the rest of the way en route to its first victory of the season and first 100-point game since the team defeated Columbia Union during the 1999-00 season by a final of 102-52. Every Marauder who entered the game scored at least one point.
Guard Aiesha Bellamy tied her career high with seven steals, matching a feat she accomplished last November in a win over Dowling. The Marauders finished with 27 steals in the game and committed just eight turnovers.
The Maraduers set the record for largest margin of victory in a game as they eclisped the former record of 66 held by the 1992-93 squad in a 94-28 win over Cheyney. Millersville also surpassed the school record for points in the first half, as the team held a 60-10 lead at halftime. The former record of 56 points was also held by the 1992-93 team but achieved against Holy Family.
Millersville will be back on the court tommorrow to take on Lock Haven University beginning at 4 p.m. from Pucillo Gymansium.
