Marauders mash four homers to secure series split

The bitter taste left from Saturday's two late-inning losses at East Stroudsburg was quickly washed away as Millersville attacked ESU starter Cade Davis at the plate and on the bases. Jimmy Kirk hit a two-run home run in the first inning, Donis Rodriguez pinged the foul pole in the second, Christo Hunsicker hit his first career homer in the third, and Brady Ebbert led off the sixth with an opposite field blast.
"Huge. It started in the first inning with Donis getting on base, and Matthew (Williams) being selfless," said Millersville head coach Jon Shehan. Matthew tries to move a guy over and hits a single. The game gives back, and we were off to the races from there."
Millersville also manufactured runs and played small ball, getting a sacrifice fly from Rodriguez and a perfectly executed squeeze bunt from Caleb Sturtevant in the fifth.
"That's Marauder baseball," said Shehan. "We have to find different ways to beat you, and the guys did a good job executing today."
Usually an active base-running team, Millersville stole just one base and scored a total of three runs Saturday, so aggression was theme of the day at the plate. Millersville swiped three bases, produced hits in 3-0 counts and totaled double-digit hits for the first time in 10 games. Rodriguez, Xavier Smith and Caleb Sturtevant all swiped bases, and Smith, advancing on a wild pitch, pressured the ESU catcher into an errant throw to third base, which resulted in another run. Shehan credited first base coach Amani Jones with preparing the team on the bases paths.
"Amani watches a lot of video, and he was prepared," said Shehan. "Saturday was poor process, and I will take a lot of the blame for that. We were just not prepared to go in there and hit--taking pitches with opportunities to drive runs in. I thought East Stroudsburg did a good job with the run game, but we didn't do a good job being the dynamic offensive team that we can be."
After being hit with a full-count pitch to start the bottom fo the first, Rodriguez stole second on the first pitch to Williams. Williams slapped an outside pitch to right field, scoring Rodriguez. Kirk then deposited the first offering from Davis over 400 feet into the pines in left center for an immediate 3-0 lead. After ESU scored twice in the top of the third to cut Millersville's lead to 5-2, the Marauders answered with Smith's baserunning and Hunsicker's blast. The Marauders cruised from there.
Hunsicker went 3 for 4 with two runs. Rodriguez drove in three runs and scored twice. Smith went 2 for 3 with two runs.
On the mound, Eli Simonth exited after allowing three runs on five hits and a walk in 3 2/3. Carlos Caraballo worked out of the fourth inning and into the fifth, picking up the win. Joe Morrissey provided 1 1/3 scoreless before Ryan Fox struck out two of the three batters he faced in the seventh.
