SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. - Alex Kuehn pitched a complete game in Millersville's 10-2 game one victory, and in game two, the Marauders held on for a 6-5 win despite committing five errors and Shepherd loading the bases in the seventh.
Millersville (19-6, 4-2) received a sterling outing from Kuehn, who struck out a career-high 10 batters without issuing a walk. He surrendered just one earned run while logging his second complete game of the season.
Sammy Laux had three hits in the first game and one in the second to extend his hitting streak to eight. Jimmy Kirk hit his team-leading sixth home run of the season, and Brady Ebbert hit his fourth. Both blasts came in game one.
In the opener, Laux and Donis Rodriguez combined for six of the team's 12 hits with Laux driving in three runs. Christo Hunsicker scored three runs and stole three bases.
The Marauders raced to a 4-0 lead in the first inning, using RBI singles from Xavier Smith and Laux, and a wild pitch that scored Hunsicker. The Marauders led by no fewer than three runs the rest of the way, and continued to pile on in the late innings.
Millersville's game two win was not pretty, and it was a narrow escape in the seventh. The five errors were the most committed by a Millersville team since April 16, 2010 and led to a pair of unearned runs, and one in the seventh put Millersville's lead in jeopardy.
The Marauders trailed 4-3 in the top of the sixth but rallied. Williams led off with a single and later scored on a bases-loaded balk. Laux's sacrifice fly brought home Ebbert, and Troy Chamberlin singled in Smith to give Millersville a two-run lead. In the bottom of the seventh, Shepherd loaded the bases with a single, Millersville error and walk. A walk pulled the Rams to within one. Millersville called Carlos Caraballo out of the bullpen, and he shut the door on the Rams, getting Braylon Conner to pop out, and fanning Bodie Pullen.
Matthew WIlliams led Millersville with two hits. Hunsicker drove in two runs. Rodriguez and Kirk both recorded a hit and two walks. The first five hitters in Millersville's lineup accounted for all six of the team's runs.
With usual starter Eli Simonton having started on Monday, Clark Green made his first career start and went 1 2/3 innings. The Marauders used five pitchers with Brady Grimes picking up the win with 1 1/3 innings of work, and Caraballo earning his first career save.
