MILLERSVILLE, Pa. - Day Waters totaled 28 points, nine rebounds and five steals, leading the Millersville men's basketball team to an 85-67 methodical dispatching of visiting Kutztown Wednesday night in Pucillo Gymnasium.
Waters scored 20-plus points for the third game in a row, drilling 10 of 17 shots from the field and 4 of 7 from three against Kutztown's 2-3 zone. His five steals were a career high and along with Aamir Hurst's three and Saraj Ali's three, the Marauders generated 13 steals and turned over the Golden Bears 17 times. While Kutztown entered the game with the PSAC's top field goal percentage defense, Millersville sank 50% of its shots.
The Marauders led wire-to-wire. It took more than three minutes for either team to get on the board, but Ali's dunk got the Marauders started. Millersville closed the final five minutes of the first half on a 13-2 run, turning a two-possession game into a 16-point lead at the break.
"In the first half especially, I thought we did a good job rebounding and playing defense," said Millersville head coach Casey Stitzel. "We became a little stagnant in the half court, so once it got stagnant, I thought our pressure and three-quarter court pressure really helped with some transition buckets. That kind of got us going a little bit."
Millersville needed fewer than five minutes in the second half to stretch its lead to 20 and led by as many as 22.
"They got the two offensive rebounds to start to the second half, but again, I thought we played good defense," said Stitzel. "When we get into transition, we're going to get either an open three or our guards are getting to the rim. We have to continue to expand our good habits. When we have the lead, make sure we don't give up a run and make mistakes on our own."
Waters scored 15 in the first half and 13 in the second. Ali finished with 19 points on 9 of 14 shooting. Carnell Henderson added 11 points. Dante Weise played an outstanding floor game, totaling nine points on 4 of 6 shooting, grabbed five rebounds, blocked a shot, and handed out four assists to just one turnover.
Now 12-6 overall and 7-4 in PSAC play, Millersville has won four of its last five. The Marauders have won six in a row against Kutztown--all six by at least 13 points.
