MILLERSVILLE, Pa. - Behind 25 points from Day Waters steamrolled its way to an easy 78-60 victory over Shippensburg Wednesday at Pucillo Gymnasium.
After scoring a season-low six points at West Chester on Monday, Waters got untracked early. He shot 11 of 19 from the field, made 3 of 6 from three, scored Millersville's first points of the game and capped the half with a 3-pointer and 14 points. He continued to pour it on in the second half, scoring 15 more and helping Millersville extend its halftime lead of 17 to as many as 26.
"I thought we did a good job getting Day off some pin-downs and flex cuts," said Millersville head coach Casey Stitzel. "We tried to get him loose off screens. We did a good job screening, and when the first couple go in, that gets you going. He hit some threes and got to the basket. That's the kind of game he needed, and we'll need that kind of scoring from him in the last six games if we are going to make some noise."
Saraj Ali scored 16 to go with eight rebounds and two blocked shots. Aamir Hurst added 14 with four assists, and E.J. Matthews-Spratley scored 11, sinking 3 of 6 from three. Millersville made eight 3-pointers and totaled 17 assists to 12 turnovers.
"I thought we executed, got body movement and did a good job getting different guys looks," said Stitzel. "I told the guys its a new season, and we have to take these last six games day by day. To have that offensive performance was very good. We still need to get better on the glass and not get complacent with leads. I'm sure we'll do a better job with that."
Millersville's defensive effort, particularly on PSAC leading scorer Markus Frank, truly paved the way to victory. Freshman Carnell Henderson drew the assignment to guard the 20-point-per-game scorer, and forced him to take off-balance, contested shots on the move. Frank scored a season-low nine points on 4 of 13 shooting. Shippensburg shot 37.3% from the field, 3 of 14 from three and finished with just four assists. Millersville improved to 14-2 when holding opponents to fewer than 80 points.
"Against Frank, we have to force him to see bodies," said Stitzel. "We know he wants to get to his right hand. He's really good in transition. A way to play Shippensburg tough is to keep (Michael) Dickson and (Jaydon) Smith out of transition by not turning the ball over. Our half-court execution helped get our defense set. We did a good job with our hedges and when they drove, they saw our bigs and early stunts."
The win marked Millersville's ninth in a row over Shippensburg--the longest winning streak against the Raiders since a run of 10 straight from 1965-1970.
Millersville improved to 15-7 overall and 10-5 in the PSAC with the win and hosts Mansfield for a 3 p.m. tip on Saturday.
