KUTZTOWN, Pa. - Day Waters scored 24 points, leading four Millersville Marauders in double figures, and a barrage of 3-pointers down the stretch helped the Marauders pull away for an 80-63 win at Kutztown Wednesday evening.
Millersville struggled mightily from 3-point range for long stretches but caught fire at the right time. With the game tied 47-47 and just over 12 minutes to play, E.J. Matthews-Spratley, Aaamir Hurst and Malcom Dread connected for four threes in a span of three minutes. Millersville went on a 14-0 run to gain separation and led by at least 11 points the rest of the game.
"That run was predicated on getting stops and getting in transition," said Millersville head coach Casey Stitzel. "Playing with four guards and four ball-handlers who can drive and make shots, we did a good job making the extra pass. But that all started because the defensive pressure went up."
Kutztown's 10 possessions during Millersville's run resulted in six missed shots and four turnovers.
All five of Millersville's made 3-pointers in the second half came in the final 12 minutes. Before Matthews-Spratley's make, the Marauders had missed their first five threes of the half. The start of the game wasn't any better. Millersville scored eight points in the opening 11-plus minutes and missed its first 11 3-pointer attempts. The Marauders trailed 20-8 before Carnell Henderson sank a pair of free throws, a lay-up off an offensive rebound and the team's first 3-pointer with 7:55 to play in the half. That sparked helped Millersville rally to a 35-35 tie at the half.
"We couldn't make a shot to start the game," said Stitzel. "That's as cold as we've been in a long time. We had a nice spurt at the end of the half, but we've got to continue to get better starting games on the road. I'm not sure we weren't completely locked in but the bad shooting drains the energy."
Despite the long droughts, Millersville still managed to make 10 3-pointers for the second consecutive game and for just the fifth time all season. While Waters shot 2 of 12 from three, he led the team with four steals and nine rebounds and added three assists.
Millersville took care of the ball, committing just four turnovers while totaling 15 assists. Dante Weise handed out six assists without committing a turnover. Hurst finished with 13 points, Henderson scored 12, and Matthew-Spratley finished with 11.
The win pulled Millersville to within a half-game of first place in the PSAC East with two games remaining. First-place West Chester has a tough road ahead with a road game at Millersville looming on Feb. 25 and a home against East Stroudsburg on Feb. 28. East Stroudsburg, which owns the head-to-head tiebreaker with Millersville, sits tied with the Marauders while Shepherd, which lost at home to West Chester Wednesday night, sits a full game out of first place with three games to play.
The Marauders travel to Bloomsburg Saturday for a 3 p.m. tip.
