Marauders set runs record, Taylor gets 300th hit in sweep of Mansfield

Millersville (27-6, 13-3 PSAC East) hit four home runs in the doubleheader, including one in each game from Jimmy Kirk. The Marauders sent 16 different hitters to the plate in game one, piling up 28 hits and 11 walks. Kirk went 4 for 5 with five RBIs in the opener, and plated two more runs, scored twice more and added two hits in game two. Amani Jones totaled six hits and eight RBIs on the day. Ten Marauders had two or more hits in game one, and Troy Chamberlin added a career-high three hits in game two.
The 30 runs tied for the fifth-most runs ever scored in a game involving a PSAC team and were the most scored by any PSAC team since 2022.

Millersville's offensive explosion came one day after scoring six total runs and stranding 17 base runners in two games against a Mansfield pitching staff that entered the weekend last in the PSAC in team ERA. The slump, however, had been more prolonged than just one day. Millersville had scored more than six runs just twice in 12 games after scoring at least seven in 14 of the first 17 games of the season. Millersville head coach Jon Shehan saw a talented lineup that was frustrating and pressing at the plate. He made some changes Sunday morning, but to the pregame routine, not the batting order.
"We had a really tough talk in between games yesterday in terms of where we wanted to be as a team," said Shehan. "They responded to that. I said my piece yesterday, gave them responsibility to take control of the team, and this morning we came out, had a bunch of fun, played home run derby instead of taking batting practice, and cut it loose. Our identity is energy. We feed off it. When we are relentless, our dugout is loud, and that's the way they need to be if they are going to be good."
Leadoff hitter Jeff Sabater set the tone in the first inning of the day, battling back from an 0-2 count to draw a walk. He then stole second and third base, setting up Matthew Williams for an RBI groundout. It was the first of three runs in the game for Sabater, and for Williams, who had had just one RBI in the previous 12 games, went on to drive in one more in the opener before mashing his 10th homer of the season in game two--his first since March 21.
"I talked to the coaching staff about lineups, and our lineup isn't broken," said Shehan. "A lot of people have been giving me ideas, 'Switch this, switch that.' No. Our best players need to be themselves. Jeff needs to be a table setter, and Matthew needs to hit for power, and guys need to go out there and be who they are. We need to trust it. That's what we did today."

Millersville scored at least one run in each of the first six innings, including nine in the third and 12 in the sixth. Seventeen Marauders went to the plate in the inning, and among the nine hits was a three-run home run from Jones. It came from the right side of the plate after he had hit a home run from the left side Saturday night.
Alex Kuehn went four innings to improve to 4-0. Jordan Oliver and Mike Costello both pitched shutout innings to close out the win.
Williams and the Marauders struck early again in game two as Sabater again led off with a walk, stole second base and scored on Williams' two-run shot. Mansfield's Jacob Houtz hit his second homer of the weekend in the fourth inning to close the gap to 5-3, and the teams traded runs in the sixth. In the top of the seventh, with the Marauders holding on to a 6-4 lead, Bren Taylor became the third player in PSAC history with 300 career hits when he singled between the second and first basemen, plating Keegan Soltis. Millersville broke open the game from there with Chamberlin doubling in two, Jones driving in a pair with a triple and then taking home on a double steal.

Millersville starter Garet Blankenbiller tossed 5 1/3 innings, improving to 5-1. Matt Shamany logged the final 1 1/3, keeping Mansfield off the scoreboard.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
- Taylor joined West Chester's Matt Cotellese (2005-09) and Millersville's Chas McCormick (2014-17) in the PSAC's 300-hit club. Taylor is seven hits away from the PSAC record. He also scored one run, putting him three runs away from the school's career record.
- Williams became the 10th player in program history to hit double-digit home runs in a season, and his 27 homers are just two away from Cole Friese's (2017-21) program record. Williams is the only Marauder with eight or more home runs in three different seasons.
- Sabater swiped five bases on the day, moving him ahead of McCormick for third on Millersville's career list. He's one of three Marauders with two seasons of 30 steals.
