MILLERSVILLE, Pa. - Millersville University defensive lineman Tyler Tate is getting a shot at the next level. The former Marauder has been invited to the Pittsburgh Steelers rookie mini-camp for a tryout.
Tate, who played at Millersville from 2019-22, announced the Steelers' invitation on Twitter. The rookie mini-camp follows the recently held NFL Draft and is for first-year players, draft picks, undrafted free agent signings and a selection of invited tryouts. According to Steelersnow.com, Tate is one of six unsigned players invited to the mini-camp. The mini-camp runs from May 12-14 at the Steelers' UPMC Rooney Sports Complex.
NFL teams can hold up to 90 players on the off-season roster before making cuts at the end of training camp.
As a Marauder, Tate was a two-time All-PSAC East First Team selection and a two-time team captain. In 2021, Tate ranked 10th in Division II in sacks with 11, and he tallied 6 1/2 more as a senior in 2022. Over his final two seasons, Tate recorded 31 tackles for loss and forced four fumbles. He primarily played defensive end in Millersville's three-man defensive front. According to Millersville defensive coordinator Matt Sutjak, the Steelers are planning to try out Tate as an outside linebacker.
In addition to the tryout, Tate has filed for the Canadian Football League Draft, which takes place on May 2.
