WEST CHESTER, Pa. - A short-handed Millersville men's tennis team battled back from a 2-0 deficit to top West Chester 2-0 on the road Friday afternoon.
The Marauders were without a No. 6 singles player and also had to take a forfeit at No. 3 doubles. Still, the Marauders won to improve to 5-6 overall and 3-0 in PSAC action.
HOW IT HAPPENED
• Dylan Tull and Zach Pernia improved to 4-0 as a tandem with a 6-2 win in the No. 1 doubles flight, but a narrow 6-4 West Chester win at No. 2 paired with the forfeit at No. 3 gave West Chester an early advantage.
• West Chester needed to win two of the five contested singles matches to clinch, but Millersville swept all five. Tull (6-1, 6-1) and Jasper de Koning (6-3, 6-1) won in straight sets in the No. 1 and No. 5 flights respectively. Shaurya Piplani won a first-set tiebreaker and Lino Morin won a second-set tiebreaker en route to a pair of straight set wins. Pernia, playing in the No. 3 slot, scored a first-set win but dropped the second. He rallied in the third to close out a 6-2, 1-6, 6-4 point for the Marauders.
POSTMATCH REACTION FROM COACH MATT HELSEL
•"Our men played extremely focused singles. We fell behind 2-0 with the doubles court and the default, so we didn't have much margin for error. The guys really rolled up their sleeves and did the job. Lino gutted out two tough sets and was the clinching match. He did a great job after a tough doubles match."
