MILLERSVILLE, Pa. - The spring semester has been a grind for the Millersville men's tennis team, but the Marauders capped their regular season Wednesday with a 4-3 win over Frostburg State despite playing with just four players and losing another in singles.
Millersville boosted its record to 7-8 with the win and now looks on to the PSAC Tournament where it will face Mercyhurst in the semifinals on Saturday.
HOW IT HAPPENED
• Millersville dominated doubles play with Dylan Tull and Zach Pernia completing their regular season with an 8-0 record together. They defeated Frostburg State's No. 1 team by a 6-2 score. Jasper de Koning and Shaurya Piplani rolled in the No. 2 flight to a 6-0 shutout win. It was only the second time that de Koning and Piplani had teamed, and it was their first win.
• With just four players, Millersville already gave up two points with forfeits in the No. 5 and No. 6 flights, and Piplani retired in the first set of his match at No. 2 singles. The Marauders, however, got the three points they needed. Tull won a second set tiebreaker to close his win at No. 1, 6-2, 7-6 (6-2). de Koning and Pernia both blanked their opponents, 6-0, 6-0. Tull and de Koning closed the regular season with identical 12-7 records.
REACTION FROM COACH MATT HELSEL
• "Shaurya came up big in doubles despite not feeling 100%, which is par for the course for us this year. Dylan and Zach have quietly put together incredible seasons for us. They've anchored our lineup in singles and doubles and continue to keep us in position to have a chance--undefeated in doubles and rock solid in singles. They are due some serious props this spring."
UP NEXT
• The PSAC Semifinals and Championship are hosted at Bloomsburg University. Opposite of Millersville and Mercyhurst in the bracket are Edinboro and Bloomsburg. Millersville plays at 2 p.m.
