'Ville softball set to host a pair of doubleheaders this week

ABOUT THE GAME

  • The Millersville softball team is entering its final two weeks of Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern division play and currently sits at No. 5 in the standings. The Marauders, who sit at 10-10 in conference play, will welcome East Stroudsburg to Seaber Softball Stadium on Tuesday, April 18 and Lock Haven on Friday, April 21 with hopes of moving over the .500 mark and closer to its first postseason berth since 2018. The top five teams from each division qualify for postseason play. 
  • ‘Ville dropped both of its games at ESU earlier this season and split with the Bald Eagles in Lock Haven. 
  • ESU ranks No. 2 in the PSAC East standings while Lock Haven is currently on the outside looking in at No. 7. 

SCOUTING THE MARAUDERS

  • The Marauders enter this week on a four-game winning streak and outscored opponents 41-11 in those four victories. Aleese Angelo, this week’s PSAC East Athlete of the Week, played a large role in producing those runs, as she went 10-for-16 from the plate, drove in 11 RBI’s and scored 10 runs. She currently leads the conference in doubles with 18 and ranks second in slugging percentage (.787), OPS (1.280) and RBI's (43).
  • Gabby D’Ottavio has also been a big part of the Marauders’ offensive success this season, batting .368 with 32 RBI’s and 16 runs.
  • ‘Ville currently leads the conference in homeruns with 29. Angelo has hit seven this season, followed by five from Gabi Turner, four from Victoria Fuss and three from D’Ottavio, Kendra Bumgardner and Allyson Black. Three additional players have hit homeruns this season.
  • Alex Schaefer and Morgan Crutcher figure to draw two starts each in the upcoming doubleheaders. Schaefer currently ranks second In the conference in strikeouts with 157 and is tied for first in wins with 15. Crutcher has given up a combined five runs in her last 16.2 innings pitched and will look to continue that play this week.

SCOUTING THE WARRIORS

  • East Stroudsburg is 28-12 overall and 16-6 in conference action and ranks No. 3 in team batting average in the PSAC. The Warriors come into Tuesday’s doubleheader on a four-game winning streak that includes sweeps over Shippensburg and Shepherd.
  • ESU is led by Reilly Vicendese who is currently batting .397 with 43 runs scored. She ranks seventh in the conference in stolen bases.
  • In the circle, the Warriors are led by Paige Zigmund who holds a 1.84 earned-run average, .97 WHIP and a 15-3 record, which ties Schaefer for most wins in the conference. Leigh Ann Jenkins follows Zigmund with a 3.02 earned-run average and an 8-5 record.

SCOUTING THE BALD EAGLES

  • The Bald Eagles are an even 19-19 and 9-13 in PSAC East play. They come into this week after dropping three of their last four, getting swept by West Chester and splitting with Kutztown.
  • Lock Haven is led by Delaney Good who leads the conference in runs scored (46), ranks second in average (.478) and on-base percentage (.539) and third in hits with 65.
  • Kinley Gioglio is the Bald Eagles’ top arm and sports a 3.13 earned-run average, 34 strikeouts and a 4-1 record.
