MILLERSVILLE, Pa. – The Marauders improve to 2-2 after defeating the Lions of Georgian Court at Biemesderfer Stadium on Tuesday evening while Georgian drops to 1-4 on the season. After scoring three goals in each of the first three quarters, Millersville's defense limited the Lions to scoring just one in the fourth. Rachel Keeney led the Marauders in scoring with four, tallying three consecutive goals in the third quarter. Hayden Corcoran and Kaleigh Funk both recorded a hat trick on Tuesday, Corcoran also led the Marauders in assists with three. Morgan Scott made 11 saves against the Lions for a .524 save percentage.
"It was an assist game for us," said head coach Kaitlyn Hafdell. "Today was about looking for the assists and being unselfish with the ball which helped us get those goals. We recognized Georgian Court's defense and what they were running, we had to change our game plan in order to be successful. We utilized many of our plays that involved feeding and assists."
Millersville dominated statistically by outshooting the Lions 29-26, forcing 18 Georgian Court turnovers compared to their 16, and scooping up 22 ground balls while Georgian Court grabbed 17.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Georgian Court jumped to a quick start after scoring two goals in the first two minutes of action. After a save from Morgan Scott, the Marauder quickly transitioned the ball down the field and Linthicum would score to put the Marauders within one. Less than two minutes later, Georgian Court would score a man-up after the Marauders received a yellow card. Mary Moraca's defense would cause a Lions turnover which returned possession to the Marauders, Corcoran would score with 2:31 remaining to put the Marauders down 3-2 closing the first quarter.
- Corcoran would quickly tie the score 3-3 to open the second quarter but the Lions offense answered right back with two goals to regain the lead. The Marauders' generated an attacking spark to tallying three consecutive goals to lead 6-5 with 6:30 until half. The Lions would tie the score with 0:50 seconds remaining, but the Marauders' earned a free-position attempt which Keeney capitalized on to lead 7-6 heading into the third.
- The Lions would tie the score for the last time after Georgian Court's Isabel Raimondi leveled the playing field, 7-7. Keeney would then score three of the next four goals to lead the Lions 10-8 with 5:20 remaining. Georgian Court would score to trail by one goal, but Simonetti and Funk would both score with under two minutes to extend Millersville's lead 12-9 entering the final quarter of regulation.
- Millersville outscored Georgian Court 2-1 to secure the victory on Tuesday evening. The Marauders' effective defense would hold the Lions from creating offense momentum for almost the entire fourth quarter as Georgian Court's only goal was scored with 0:46 remaining.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Ella Linthicum tallied two goals for Millersville and Ashlyn Simonetti scored once and dished out one assist. Liv Genovese scored one goal for the Marauders and Clare Roussey would mark one assist.
- Keeney fired off a team-high of seven shots, six of which were on goal.
- Corcoran and Genovese recorded six shots each.
- Scott led the Marauders in ground balls with six.
- Taiyana Goldsborough's defense caused a team-high of four caused turnovers.
- Millersville and Georgian Court both won 14 draw controls each.
