Millersville extends win streak to seven with pair of wins over Goldey-Beacom

MILLERSVILLE, Pa. – Bren Taylor connected on a walk-off single in game one and Carson Kulina spun a complete game shutout in game two as Millersville swept Goldey-Beacom on a windy Saturday afternoon at Cooper Park.

Millersville (14-3) has now won seven consecutive games and is a perfect 7-0 at home this season. The Lightning (7-4) battled in game one, forcing the seven-inning contest into extra innings, but the veteran top of the Marauder lineup was able to come through in the bottom of the ninth. Game two was a different story, as the Marauders surged ahead to a 9-0 lead after the first two innings. Goldey-Beacom never threatened against Kulina as the Marauders picked up a 10-0 win, shutting out their opponent for the first time this season.

GAME ONE

The Lightning jumped ahead with two runs in the second off of Alex Mykut, but that was all Goldey-Beacom could put together against the Marauder staff. Mykut rebounded after the second, tossing 6.1 innings while scattering six hits and picking up eight strikeouts.

The Marauders offense got on the board in the third as Taylor singled the other way, bringing second baseman Tyler Wright in to score. A Matthew Williams single to center tied the game at 2-2 in the fourth. Neither offense could rally after the tie, as both teams had chances to end the game in extras.

"I thought Goldey's pitchers did a great job in game one keeping us off balance, making quality pitches in big spots," Marauder head coach Jon Shehan said.

Chase Simmons gave the offense the spark it needed in the ninth, with a leadoff double down the left field line. After Wright had a pair of failed bunt attempts, he was able to execute by grounding out to first, advancing the winning run to third with only one out. A Jimmy Losh hit by pitch set the table for Taylor to deliver. The senior outfielder roped a base hit to right field, ending the game on his third hit of the contest.

"Bren Taylor is just special, he puts balls in play, is just a tough out, and you have your chips stacked against you when you have to face guys like him and Losh with runners in scoring position," Shehan said.

Taylor led the way in game one, going 3-for-5 with two runs driven in. Losh and Williams each had two hits for the Marauders who outhit the Lightning 11-7.

GAME TWO

A Lightning error with two outs in the first opened the door for the Marauder offense, as four unearned runs came across to score. Sam Morris reached on the error, scoring Losh to put the Marauders ahead. Williams then capitalized on the extra out by crushing a no-doubter to left, his third home run of the season and first at home to make it a 3-0 lead. Thomas Caufield followed Williams with an opposite field blast, his first of the season.

"We had a good plan going in, the guys executed, got some pitches to hit and didn't miss," Shehan said.

Kulina (4-0) put the offense right back to work after a 1-2-3 second inning that featured a pair of strikeouts. 'Ville added another five runs in the bottom of the frame on three hits, while running rampant on the bases with five steals. Taylor and Williams both continued their hot hitting with RBI singles.

In total, the Marauders stole eight bases over the first two innings, including a double steal that produced a run. "The guys did a really good job on the bases taking advantage of a high knee lift and slow pick off," Shehan said. "The guys really have the mindset of being aggressive on the bases."

The lead was more than enough for Kulina who was nearly untouchable on the mound, allowing just two singles while striking out nine batters and walking none. He needed just 82 pitches for the complete game shutout.

"It (limiting walks) is a mentality that starts with Coach Kramer and we've tried to set the tone over the past two years recruiting strike throwers, so I think you're seeing a product of recruiting strike throwers and the hard work they're putting in," Shehan added.

The Marauders totaled 22 hits on the day, with 11 coming in each end of the doubleheader.

UP NEXT
The four-game series continues on Sunday, March 5 as the Marauders head to Goldey-Beacom for another doubleheader. First pitch is set for noon.
