MILLERSVILLE, Pa. – It's been a long time coming for the Millersville women's track & field program and head coach
Andy Young, who is in his 16
th year at 'Ville, earning multiple second and third place finishes at the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Outdoor Championships over the past eight years. Today the drought ended, as the women's track & field program brought home its first PSACÂ title since 1996 and were able to reach the height on Chryst Field at Biemesderfer Stadium.
"We've been working so hard at this for quite some time," said Coach Young. "We thought we had the team in 2020 and then the pandemic ended that hope for us, so those girls, and ones that aren't even here anymore had a 'we need to do this' type of attitude." Â
Â
The Marauders wouldn't allow themselves to fall down the leaderboard in 2022, leading for virtually the entire weekend and continuing to add on to that lead day-by-day. Millersville dominated the field events, earning the most points in hammer throw (18), discus throw (16), and shot put (13).
Hannah Woelfling, who was named PSAC Championship Most Valuable Player, was a huge part of the group's success, placing first in the hammer, which gives her back-to-back individual titles in the event. The sophomore also placed first in the discus, while taking fourth in the shot put, an event she just took up this year. Aliyah Stiver also had a strong performance, placing second in the hammer and shot put, while taking fourth in the discus. The program also saw its first ever PSAC Champion in the pole vault, as freshman,
Darian Hauf took the title. Â
Â
"Hannah, you know, overall MVP is well deserved, because what she did for our team isn't just athletically, she helps drive the emotion and excitement," said coach Young. "She picked up shot put this year, finished fourth at our conference meet, that's insane. Two conference records for the meet and one overall conference record, I can't say enough about what she did."
Â
The Marauders also faired well on the track, earning 12 points in the 400-meter, coming from Aubrey Syndor's second-place finish and Lyric William's fifth-place finish. They also earned eight points in the 4x400-meter relay, which may have been the most exciting event of the weekend for Marauder fans as it solidified the team's title.
Mia Carson,
Emma Elwell, Williams, and Syndor placed second in the event and moved to third all-time in program history with a time of 3:52.85. The 4x100 group took home bronze in their final, featuring Gabriela Karch,
Arianna Kouakou, Hauf, and Elwell, which earned 'Ville six points.
Morgan Janiuk competed in three distance races earning a total of five points for 'Ville with her top finish coming in the 1500-meter at fifth.
Â
"It was a lot of work by our coaching staff and by these women, day-to-day and year-to-year to get to this point," said Coach Young. "They knew what they had to do to get to this point and they did it."
Â
The Marauders held a final team score of 113, edging out second-place Slippery Rock (93.33) and third-place Shippensburg (87). This marks the program's fifth first-place finish, first since 1996, and first with 15 teams competing in the field.
