BLOOMSBURG, Pa. - Millersville men's tennis players Carlos Martinez-Lucas and Frank Yanni are still playing after two days at the PSAC Individual Championships. Martinez-Lucas and Yanni will play for a doubles championship on Sunday, and Martinez-Lucas is two wins away from a singles title.
Martinez-Lucas and Yanni are on the precipice of history. Since the PSAC Individual Championships started in 2004, only one Millersville doubles team has brought home the title. That was Preetham Moras and Drew Slocum in 2010. No Marauder has won a singles title.
EVENT HIGHLIGHTS
• The league's top eight team were entered into the doubles bracket. Yanni and Martinez received the No. 2 seed and won each of their first two matches to reach the finals. The Marauder tandem won 8-1 in round one, and beat Kutztown's Gonzalo Barcelo and Sebastian Arizpe by the same score in the semis. Yanni and Martinez-Lucas square off against unseeded Roco Palombarini and Bruno Sabio of Edinboro in the finals. The Fighting Scots team upset Mercyhurst's top-seeded duo in the first round.
• Martinez-Lucas drew the top seed in singles and promptly defeated Felix Weber of West Chester 6-3, 6-0 and Aidan Cashin of West Chester 6-0, 6-0 to reach the semifinals. There, he will face Mercyhurst's David Akinpetide, a player he has not faced before. On the opposite side of the bracket, Edinboro's Ruben Acuna and Bruno Sabio meet for a shot at the finals.
• Yanni also competed in the singles bracket, and he won his first round match over Bloomsburg's Patel Vishesh, 2-6, 6-2 (12-10). He pushed Sabio into a tiebreaker as well before falling, 6-7 (1), 6-1 (10-5).
