Shank's record performance keys Marauders to 48-23 win over Lock Haven

MILLERSVILLE, Pa. - The record had been held for 20 years by Millersville Athletics Hall of Famer Drew Folmar. No longer. Millersville quarterback Collin Shank totaled 454 yards of total offense and threw five of the team's school-record-tying six touchdown passes as Millersville rolled to a 48-23 win over Lock Haven Saturday.

Shank completed 24-of-29 passes for 420 yards and rushed for 34, leading Millersville to a season-high 592 yards of offense--missing the school record set in 1963 by just 37 yards. The barrage started early as he threw three touchdown passes in the first quarter, and Miles Miller, who spelled an injured Shank on one drive late in the second quarter, threw the other. Kevon Newerls and Evan Morrill both made a career-high two TD receptions. Newerls' 144 yards were the most by a Marauder since Jamal Smith's 164 yards on Oct. 30, 2010.

The Millersville defense forced four fumbles and recovered three.

HOW IT HAPPENED
• Shank fired a touchdown pass on each of the Marauders' first three possessions. Freshman tight end Brian Richardson's catch and run for 47 yards started the scoring. Less than four minutes later, Shank delivered a 33-yard strike to Tyrell Wickersham. To close the quarter, Shank connected with Kevon Newerls who beat one-on-one coverage and raced 70 yards down the sideline for the longest TD pass at Millersville since 2015.
• Lock Haven answered with back-to-back scores in the second quarter, cutting Millersville's lead to 21-14. With time running out in the half, Shank and the Marauders advanced to the Lock Haven 18, but on the third-and-six completion to Drew Schwindenhammer, Shank was shaken up. Miller entered, and the Marauders' staff gambled on fourth-and-three from the Lock Haven 11. With 13 seconds left, Miller fired a bullet toward the Millersville sideline to Morrill, who reached the ball just inside the front pylon for a 27-14 Millersville lead.
• Millersville needed just five plays to cover 73 yards on the opening drive of the third quarter. It ended with a Shank to Newerls touchdown from 13 yards out. The Marauders traveled 71 yards in eight plays on the next drive, and 43 of those yards came when Shank found Morrill sprinting down the seam for a touchdown. The Marauders capped the scoring with just under nine minutes left when Bryan Malone rushed in from nine yards.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
• Millersville's 444 yards passing came within 14 of the school record, which was set in 1999 against Kutztown. The six TD passes tied the record shared by the 1979 (vs. Salisbury State) and 1999 (vs. Kutztown) teams. Millersville's 148 yards rushing were a season-high.
• Newerls finished with a career-high six catches. Morrill set a career-high with 99 yards.
Isaiah Onuschak totaled 12 tackles, a sack and a forced fumble. Zac Button added 11 tackles and a forced fumble. Datrell Reed recovered two fumbles.

COACH J.C. MORGAN'S THOUGHTS
On the winning feeling: "It was great to get the winning feeling again; watch those guys walk into the locker room with smiles on their faces and hugging each other. For what we have been through the last four weeks, I was happy they were able to experience that. It warms my heart. I told them in the postgame speech that we have to do whatever it takes to get that feeling again. We have five more opportunities to get it."
On Shank's performance: "Good for him to have some success. It has been up and down for him the last few weeks with injuries and things going on in his personal life. For him to bounce back, make some throws, make good reads and make good reads and make some plays with his legs was good. I am happy for him."
On what he expected from Lock Haven: "We knew that we had to score today because Lock Haven has put up some points. They have played a tough schedule just like us and through that they have moved the ball. We knew they would have some success moving the ball. We were able to match it with our offense."

NOTES
• Shank's 454 yards of total offense were the fifth-most in Division II this season.
• Onuschak has double-digit tackles and at least one tackle for loss in five of six games. He now has five sacks on the season, which is within one of the most by a Marauder since 2001.
• Saturday's performance was the second 400-yard passing game in Shank's career. He threw for 424 and four touchdowns against Seton Hill in 2017.
• Eleven different players caught passes for the Marauders. Eli Workinger and Nasir Best made their first career receptions while Wickersham and Richardson caught their first career touchdown passes.
• Millersville has won three in a row over Lock Haven and the 48 points were the most scored by either team in the 32 all-time meetings.

UP NEXT
• Millersville is on the road on Oct. 19, traveling to Shippensburg for a 1 p.m. kickoff.
