Orlando, Florida -- The Millersville tennis teams worked with the United Against Poverty Orlando organization during their spring break trip to help with a community service project in between their matches at the United States Tennis Associations' facilities.
Head coach Matt Helsel intertwines community service projects with team trips to strengthen the teams and enlighten the members mentally.
"My captain, Christian Boyer, reached out to several local charities, and United Against Poverty was able to fit us in on the day that we had available," Helsel said. "The men's and women's teams are committed to community service...We encourage the players to think big, to think beyond their own circumstances, [and] to take a larger perspective of their roles as people and student-athletes."
According to United Against Poverty's website, the organization works to improve impoverished neighborhoods by providing crisis care, food, education, and various other social services to their area.
Helsel saw the opportunity to provide perspective to his athletes with the community service project with United Against Poverty.
"For this trip, we were obviously blessed to be able to travel together and enjoy the week of tennis and vacation, but it was good for us to see another side of Orlando, another side of our country, that isn't as blessed," Helsel said. "It was great to help out even just a little and for us to get a greater appreciation of what we have. It also helps to keep things in perspective when we have trials on the court or in the classroom. We aren't just developing as student-athletes, we're developing as people. And this is a great group of caring individuals that embrace the opportunity to give back when possible."
