Gannon tops Millersville in season finale
11/11/2017 5:53:00 PM | Football
Millersville, Pa. - Marc Jones, the leading rusher in Division II, clinched his season rushing crown with 188 yards and Gannon's defense picked off Stephen Flanagan three times to deal a 39-7 defeat to homestanding Millersville in Saturday's season finale.
Millersville finished its season with a 4-7 record--the most wins for the program since 2006. But on Saturday, Gannon's run game accounted for 304 of its 351 total yards. With Tony Staffieri out with an injury, Flanagan was pressed into service, and the Millersville offense mustered a season-low 130 yards of offense. Flanagan went 6 for 17 with four interceptions. Gannon's QB Jason Dambach completed only 4 of 15 passes, but the Golden Knights didn't need much of a passing game with Jones toting the ball 35 times and totaling two touchdowns.
Jones' two scores came in Gannon's first two possessions, both of which were set up by Millersville miscues. A bad snap on a punt led to it being blocked. Gannon took over at the Millersville 42. The next Millersville drive lasted only two plays as a deflected pass landed in the arms of Tyger Winston, who set up his offense at the Millersville 23.
With a 13-0 lead less than 10 minutes into the game, Gannon was off and running. Gannon held a 16-0 lead until 4:23 left in the third quarter when Dambach scrambled for a 27-yard TD run. Gannon's final two scores came in the final five minutes of the game. After Dambach's lone TD pass with 4:49 to play, Anthony Howard picked off Flanagan and returned it 20 yards for six.
Millersville punted eight times and committed five turnovers and turned the ball over on downs twice. The lone Millersville touchdown came when Jhet Janis returned a fourth quarter punt 71 yards for a score. The Marauders trailed 23-0 at that point. It was Millersville's first punt return for a touchdown since Andy Tischbein's in 2008.
Sean Dugan finished the game with 17 tackles, giving him 123 on the season--the most by any Marauder since 1992. His 336 career tackles ranks fifth all-time at Millersville, and his 184 solo stops rank fourth.
Fellow senior Kevin Wiggins caught a team-high three passes giving him 63 receptions and 782 yards on the season. Both totals are the most by a Marauder since 2010. Wiggins finished his career ranked third in career catches (197), third in career yards (2,465) and tied for third in touchdowns (24).
