Marauders start season strong behind Mizak's hat trick
9/3/2016 2:12:00 PM | Field Hockey
Millersville, Pennsylvania - Entering the season ranked No. 2 in Division II, Millersville field hockey started the season off right in the home opener against Newberry. The Marauders improved their regular season home winning streak to 17 games, routing the Wolves 5-0, led by Aliza Mizak's three goal performance.
"I think it's really important to get things going as a team and to get the ball rolling," said Mizak. "We're going to take it game by game, work on relationships and keep working hard in practice."
After a choppy first 15 minutes of the game, Mizak sent home the first of her three goals on a running right-handed shot from 10 yards out, one of the six shots on goal she would go on to attempt. She wasn't the only player to produce for the Marauders, as Kathleen Bishop also added two goals in the victory.
As is the case for many Millersville games, goalie Sam Rumler did not get much action, making one save over the course of the game. The strong defense of Millersville allowed merely three shots and only one shot on goal, shutting out Newberry for the fourth matchup in four games against the Wolves. The defense, led by last season's Synapse Sports Defensive Player of the Year Taylor Parker, has only let up five goals in the last 17 regular season games at home. Millersville had control from start to finish, outshooting the Wolves 22-3.
"It's everything we work for in the preseason," said head coach Shelly Behrens. "We take it one game at a time and try to be a little better each time we take the field."
Margaret Thorwart and Arianna Grays added assists in the victory.
The Marauders will take on Stonehill on Monday at 1 p.m.
