Tournament Information PSAC Tournament Central Date: Oct. 15-16, 2016 Location: Hershey Country Club East Course, Hershey, Pa. PSAC Championship History |
• For the first time in PSAC women's golf history, a team other than California (Pa.) or Gannon won the championship in 2015. That team was Millersville. The 2016 version of the Marauders looks quite a bit different, though. The Marauders lost senior Jaimie Wharton and medalist Shannon Weber, but return a pair of key contributors from that championship win and both of those individuals should be near the top of the leaderboard in 2016. Sophomore Danielle Greene and senior Danielle Freed are the Marauders' top two in scoring average. Greene (81.6) has placed in the top 10 in three of four tournaments, and Freed (83.0) has posted runner-up finishes in to consecutive tournaments. At the Michael Corbett Invitational, Greene tied for third in a field of 91 golfers with two sub-80 rounds. The only PSAC golfer to finish higher than Greene was Gannon's Julie Santo. Greene placed sixth at the championship in 2015, and Freed tied for 12th.
• The rest of the Marauders' lineup is new to the championship experience. Freshmen Joelie Bennett and Hailea Yocum have been regulars in the lineup, and Bennett shot a career-best 16-over 88 at the Alvernia Invitational, which the Marauders won. Alexa Strong has played in all four tournaments and owns a 94.6 scoring average.
• Millersville finished fifth in a field that included eight PSAC teams at the Michael Corbett Classic and also bested East Stroudsburg at the Ursinus Invitational. Millersville finished fourth out of seven PSAC programs at the season-opening Evan Parker Memorial.
• California, which has a PSAC-most five championships, does not see much action against PSAC schools but is likely the favorite after finishing runner-up by one shot in 2015. Carla Maestre is a three-time PSAC Player of the Year already and was named the player of the week in the opening week of 2016. Gannon, which has two championships, will also be fighting for the crown. Three different golfers have won the player of the week award, and Diana Munoz has won it twice. Her scoring average of 76.1 puts her in the conversation for medalist contenders.
