Shippensburg, Pa. - Shippensburg defeated Millersville in straight sets on Tuesday night in a rematch of last season's PSAC quarterfinal matchup. The Raiders have now defeated the Marauders seven straight times and lead the all-time series 32-25.
Shippensburg (8-8, 2-5 PSAC) had lost six of seven prior to Tuesday while Millersville (8-7, 2-5 PSAC) dropped its first road match of the season (3-1) and was outhit .193 to .085 on the night. The hosts won the match with set scores of 28-26, 25-18 and 25-23.
The Marauders opened the first set with a 9-3 run that was fueled by four Raider miscues and three Erin Harman kills. However, the home team used a 7-1 fury of its own to tie the match back up at 10-10. The set saw eight more ties before Shippensburg scored the final two points to take the first set in extra action.
The Raiders carried their momentum into the second set when they opened the stanza with a 16-3 advantage and forced Millersville to call a timeout and talk things over. The closest the Marauders could get was two points, 17-15, but their hosts went on to take the set by seven points and a two sets to none lead in the match.
The third set was a heated one that saw 11 ties and the score was knotted up at 23-23 towards the end. However, Shippensburg again took the final two points to win the set and the match in straight sets.
Harman led the Millersville attack with 10 kills and Victoria Biggins turned in 29 assists. Defensively, Brooklyn Smith registered 20 digs while Harman added 14 of her own. Both Biggins and Kayla Wallace assisted on three blocks apiece.
