Box Score 1 |
Box Score 2 Millersville, Pa. - Brianna Andraos pitched a complete-game shutout and
Brittany Smith brought in the only run for either team in game one but in Millersville's first extra-innings game of 2014, Bloomsburg used a big ninth inning to split with the Marauders.
Millersville (16-16, 6-8 PSAC East) and Bloomsburg (13-10, 5-5 PSAC East) hadn't met since 2011 and Wednesday afternoon, the Marauders beat the Huskies at home for the first time since 2004. Millersville has split five of its 11 doubleheaders this season with four of those coming in PSAC East play. Since opening conference action 2-0, the Marauders have gone just 4-8 in the league.
GAME ONE RECAPThere was a combined one run on eight hits in the first game as both Andraos and Bloomsburg's Taylor Parker were in complete control. However, an error by the Huskies' shortstop, Erika Yanora in the second inning came back to bite the visitors.
With two outs in the frame,
Stephanie Kulp hit a ball towards the middle, Yanora got her body behind the ball but was unable to field it. Kulp then moved to second on a passed ball and ball four to
Ashley Cantiello was a passed ball as well that put runners on the corners. Smith then stepped in and made Bloomsburg pay for the defensive lapse with an RBI single.
The Huskies stranded seven baserunners on the game and had a runner on third base in both the fifth and sixth innings. In the seventh, the first two batters reached before the next struck out. Yanora then stepped in with a chance to redeem herself but grounded into a double play for
Maria Spinosa who stepped on third and threw it over to first to end the game.
In the circle, Andraos (11-8) matched Parker punch for punch all game long. Millersville's sophomore hurler threw her sixth complete-game shutout of 2014 on five hits with two walks and three strikeouts. Parker (7-5) pitched just as well for the guests giving up just the one unearned run on three hits while striking out seven batters and walking only one. She dropped her season ERA to a miniscule 1.11, which is good for second in the entire PSAC.
GAME TWO RECAPIn the second contest, neither team scored until the fourth inning when the Huskies got on the board first with an RBI single. In the bottom of that frame, the hosts were able to tie it up, though.
Gabbie Berry singled but was retired at second base on a fielder's choice from
Heather Lutz. Spinosa then singled to center and when the center fielder tried to retire Lutz at third, the throw was wide of the bag, which allowed Lutz to cross the plate.
The Marauders took a 2-1 lead in the sixth when Spinosa reached on a fielder's choice and
Danielle DiFilippo came in to score. In the seventh, Bloomsburg tied the game back up at 2-2 when former Marauder,
Sarah Bertoni singled home a run.
Neither team scored again until the ninth inning when the Huskies exploded for 11 runs in the top of the frame. Millersville answered with a run of its own in the bottom of the ninth and that is where the score ended up at 13-3.
Amanda Wink (2-6) took the loss after throwing eight innings and gave up seven runs, five earned, on 14 hits with three strikeouts and one walk. In relief, Andraos went just a third of an inning and gave up five earned runs on four hits in her shortest outing of the season. Lastly, Cantiello retired the final two batters but gave up one unearned run on two hits.
Bertoni (3-1) made her return to Millersville Softball Field and gave up three runs, two earned, on 11 hits with three strikeouts and no walks.
The Marauders are at Bloomsburg on Friday for a doubleheader beginning at 2:30 p.m.
