Marauders Come Up Short Against Slippery Rock

Slippery Rock, Pa. - The Millersville women's lacrosse team came up a little short against host Slippery Rock on Friday afternoon in PSAC action and dropped the conference road game by a score of 20-12.

Millersville (5-9, 1-8 PSAC) was powered by junior midfielder Hannah Vogel, who was responsible for six of the Marauders 12 goals after scoring four times and dishing out two assists. Attacker Brooke Fisher broke her career record for goals in a season by tallying her 50th goal of the year in the contest and in doing so became the first Marauder to register 50 goals in a season since Liz Weekly in 2008.

Slippery Rock (6-8, 3-6 PSAC) also had a player eclipse the 50 mark of 2014 as Morgan Pettit scored eight times on the day and netted both her 50th score this season and her 100th goal of her career. Jess Verbic added a hat trick for The Rock and keeper Jordan Wagner saved 10 Black and Gold shots.

The first period was a tale of two-halves as the Rock started the game on a 7-1 run, but the Marauders countered with a 5-2 spree to close the half and trailed The Rock 9-6 at the break.

Fisher's 50th goal and senior Becky Donkin's 10th and 11th scores of the year directed the Marauders to five goals in the first 20 minutes of the second period. Slippery Rock scored six goals during that span, though, powered by all three of Verbic's goals over that stretch.

Pettit sealed the win for The Rock by scoring a hat trick in the final seven minutes alone, which led the home team to a 5-1 run to finish the match.

Three freshmen scored in the league game for the Marauders. First year lacrosse players Renee Landis, Jaime Damirgian, and Hannah Corcoran each scored one goal in the game.

Statistically, Millersville and Slippery Rock were comparable. The Marauders had a large edge in draw controls (21-13) and The Rock had a narrow advantage in shots (32-27) and shots on goal (25-22). While the two squads were even in groundballs (23-23), Slippery Rock forced the Marauders into five more turnovers and stopped 10 of the Black and Gold's 18 clearing chances (8-for-18).

Millersville will look to rebound from the loss tomorrow as they travel to first-year PSAC member Seton Hill. The first draw control is set for 3 p.m.
