Box Score 2 Shippensburg, Pa. – Millersville was hoping to get help and remain in the playoff race until the final day of the season Friday at Shippensburg with a sweep of the Raiders. That didn't happen, as Ship ended Millersville's PSAC Tournament quest for the second straight season with a game one win of 1-0. The Marauders flipped the script in game two, getting a 1-0 win of their own.
The Marauders entered game one needing a win to remain in contention for a PSAC Tournament berth for the first time in team history. Starter
Sarah Bertoni took the circle and did all she could to keep Millersville's name in the hat, fighting Raider hitters for 8.1 innings. Eventually, Shippensburg got the better of a Marauder team that managed just five hits against Makenzie Lynn, who struck out 11 hitters in the process.
Shippensburg scored the winning run on an RBI single by Kirstin McClune. Taylor Weisman, who was standing on third after her one-out single, slid in under the tag and ahead of the throw, scoring the game's only run. Bertoni silenced Raider bats with a final line of 8.1 innings pitched, eight hits allowed, one walk and five strikeouts.
Game one's loss was the second consecutive one by a 1-0 score for the Millersville ace, whose record falls to 15-9 as a result of the defeat. Despite the loss, Bertoni's inning total now sits at 147.2 in 2013. That is significant because she is just 2.2 innings from breaking her own program record for innings pitched in a season by one pitcher. She set the mark during her first year in 2012 at 150.0.
Five players for the Marauders had one hit apiece, and Millersville's best chances to plate the game's only run came in the top of the sixth and ninth innings, respectively. In the Marauder half of the sixth,
Ginely Ortiz-Marrero and
Jordan Sheffield put together back-to-back base knocks. With two on and one out, the opportunity was ruined in the next at-bat, when
Danielle DiFilippo struck out swinging and Ortiz-Marrero was caught stealing at third to extinguish Millersville's threat.
In the top of the ninth, visiting Millersville put two more hits on the board and loaded the bases with one out. DiFilippo dropped a single into center as the second batter of the inning and
Gabbie Berry followed it up with a walk. After Emily Estep relieved Lynn, the Marauders put a runner on every base with
Jamie Motsko's single into left.
On the next at-bat, Estep induced a double-play ground ball from
Ashley Cantiello. Cantiello hit it right back to Estep, who went home for the first out, and Cantiello was thrown out at first for the final out of the inning. That set up Ship's game-winning run in the bottom of the inning.
The loss, coupled with Kutztown's game one win in a doubleheader with East Stroudsburg knocked Millersville out of contention for the PSAC Tournament. This season marks the second consecutive year in which a loss to the Raiders has ended the Marauders' hopes for a conference tourney spot. In 2012, Ship beat Millersville on the final day of the regular season to knock the Marauders out.
Even though the team's playoff hopes ended after the first game,
Brianna Andraos turned the tables on Shippensburg in the second game, hurling a three-hit shutout to beat the Raiders 1-0. The victory moved Andraos' record on the year to 11-6 as she went the distance, surrendering four walks and striking out two. Millersville got its only run in the bottom of the second inning, taking advantage of a Ship error.
Andraos reached on a fielding error with one out the inning and then moved to third when
Stephanie Kulp smacked a double into left. Millersville's rookie hurler crossed the plate on the next play when Ortiz-Marrero dropped down a surprise bunt that she beat out for a single. That hit, plus Kulp's double, were two of only three hits for the Marauders in the nightcap.
Without the offense working, Andraos didn't seem to notice. The shutout was her seventh of the year, and the complete game was her 13
th. Two of her past three starts have now been shutouts, where she allowed two hits and three hits, respectively. Andraos retired the Raiders in order in three of the seven innings, including shutting down any thoughts of a comeback with a 1-2-3 inning.
The split makes Millersville's record 29-19 overall and 5-9 in PSAC East play. The team can take a crack at the program mark for wins in a season. The 2006 team won 30 games, and the Marauders have two games left against West Chester in a PSAC East battle on the final day of the regular season Saturday. The first game of the day's action starts at 1 p.m. and tomorrow's games celebrate Military Appreciation Day. You can read more about the event
