Box Score 1 |
Box Score 2 Millersville, Pa. – Opening up PSAC East play Friday against East Stroudsburg, Millersville was able to win its first game of conference play, 9-1 in six innings before falling to the Warriors in game two by a 4-0 margin.

The Marauders fell behind 1-0 in game one after sophomore starter
Sarah Bertoni served up a two-out solo blast off the bat of Becca Smith. That home run snapped Bertoni to attention, and she proceeded to dominate the Warrior lineup from the minute the ball flew past the right-centerfield fence. The second year pitcher did not allow another hit, tossing a one-hitter. She asserted her dominance in the top of the second, striking out the side and going on cruise control over the next five frames.

Once Bertoni got done fooling Warrior hitters in the top of the second inning, the offense went to work, putting three runs on the board in the bottom half of the inning. After loading the bases with one out,
Jordan Sheffield hit a bloop single over the second baseman's head into shallow right, allowing Nance to come home and continue the rally. Following Sheffield, Warrior pitcher Amanda Carlin walked
Ginely Ortiz-Marrero to bring in another run. The Marauders capped the inning when
Danielle DiFilippo shot a single back through the middle to plate
Stephanie Kulp.

But the Millersville offense didn't stop there. In the bottom of the third, the first two batters of the inning reached base on a walk and a single, respectively.
Ashley Cantiello came up next, punching a single into left to plate
Jamie Motsko. Bertoni then helped her own cause, singling to left to give herself a 5-1 lead. Kulp's two-run double in the next at-bat swelled the lead to 7-1, and Sheffield made it 8-1 with an RBI groundout to allow Kulp to score.

After the score hung around at 8-1 for the next three innings, the Marauders ended the game when Motsko scored on a wild pitch in the bottom of the sixth. While helping the team improve its record to 17-6, Bertoni also upped her own record to 9-3 on the season, already eclipsing her win total of eight from last season. She allowed just the one hit and one run while striking out six in her 10
th complete game outing of the year.

Unfortunately for the Marauders, they could have used the excess of runs they produced in game one in the twinbill's nightcap. Millersville's offense was shut out for just the second time all season and managed just six hits off of two different East Stroudsburg pitchers. Getting just her third start of the season, freshman pitcher
Amanda Wink did all she could, holding the Warrior offense off the scoreboard for the first five innings of play.

Wink's effort could not hold up, as she allowed ESU to score three unearned runs in the top of the sixth on two hits and a Millersville error, and then gave up another run in the top of the seventh. The big hit was a two-run double off the bat of Haley Thomas with two outs in the sixth inning. The Marauder bats were stifled by the duo of Allison Mende and Laura Suits. Millersville did not have more than one hit in any of the seven innings.

The game two loss drops the Marauders' record to 17-7 on the season and 1-1 in PSAC East play. The team gets right back in action Saturday against Philadelphia University for a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m. Last season, Millersville swept a doubleheader at Philadelphia, as Bertoni tossed a no-hitter in game one of the two-game set.
