2013 PSAC Champions! Gilbert and Team Take Home Titles

Results

Hummelstown, Pa. - For the first time in 10 years the Millersville men's golf team sits atop the PSAC. On Sunday afternoon, the Marauders shot 300 as a team at the 2013 PSAC Championships and held on to win their first team conference title since 2003. Junior Connor Gilbert led Millersville with a 1-under-par 143 and won the individual conference crown.

"The entire fall the team has consistently gotten better," said head men's golf coach Scott Vandegrift. "They are an experienced group and a hungry group, so I am not surprised at all. They wanted this pretty bad and were pretty calm going into today. They came out and played their best golf. This is a great win."

The Black and Gold ended Sunday with a team total of 593. California (Pa.) shot the best team score in the final round (293) and finished second overall at 595, two shots behind the Marauders. Indiana (Pa.) and West Chester finished tied for third at 597. Sunday's win was the fourth PSAC Championship for the Marauders and the second since the event moved to the fall season.

Gilbert was Millersville's first medalist since Scott Micklewright in 2004. The junior entered the final round tied for second overall and just two shots behind teammate Robby Rowe for the lead. Gilbert got off to a good start on Sunday, going 1-under-par through the first seven holes. He maintained a high level of play the entire day and finished Sunday with a 1-under-par 71, for an overall score of 143.

"I just focused on breathing and staying as calm as possible," said Gilbert. "I never pushed to hard and let all the good things come and they came and the results showed."

Rowe, who entered the day with the individual lead, shot a 3-over-par 75 and finished in third place behind Gilbert and 2012 champion Zack Kempa. Rowe finished the tournament two shots behind Gilbert with a 145, and one shot behind Kempa's 144. Millersville now boasts three All-PSAC First Team players on its roster: Gilbert and Rowe from this year and Robert Coyne from last season.

The Marauders came into the final round with a three shot lead over West Chester. Although Millersville did not shoot the low round on Sunday, it did enough to hold on for the team title. Kevin Davis and Coyne each finished the day with scores of 6-over-par 78. Jonathon Hiele nearly kept pace with his score of 75 from yesterday and came into the clubhouse with a 4-over-par 76 today.

The PSAC title takes pressure off of Millersville as it gives it an automatic bid into the NCAA Atlantic/East Super Regional in the spring. Last year the Marauders finished fifth at the regional and only a few shots away from qualifying for the NCAA Championships.
