Four-time PSAC Coach of the Year Scott Vandegrift retired as head coach of the Millersville golf programs after 40 years at the helm, and in 2026-27, he rejoined the program as a volunteer assistant coach.

Few coaches anywhere can boast the level of success that Vandegrift has brought to Millersville. He built the men's program into a perennial contender at the PSAC and NCAA Regional levels as the Marauders have qualified for the postseason 18 times since 2001 including a stretch of 11 NCAA Atlantic/East Super Regional appearances in the last 12 seasons. On the women's side, Vandegrift has guided the program since its inception in 2008-09. In the fall of 2013, the program broke through with its first tournament victory. It won five times with three runner-up finishes in 2014-15 and won its first PSAC Championship in 2015-16 along with four other tournament wins.

Vandegrift's programs are as successful as ever, as both teams set program records with five tournament wins in 2023-24, and the men's program captured Millersville's fifth PSAC Championship. In 2024-25, the women's team set a new program record with seven tournament wins.

Vandegrift's motivational skills, coupled with his dedication and enthusiasm, have helped the men's team to 79 team tournament titles since 1987. Under his direction, Millersville golfers have earned All-PSAC honors 53 times.

Timothy Peters' 2023 medalist honor led the Marauders to their first PSAC title since 2013-14, when the Marauders won behind Conor Gilbert's medalist finish. Vandegrift was named PSAC Coach of the Year for his efforts. In 2017, Connor Sheehan qualified for the NCAA Division II Championships, as did Robert Coyne in 2013. The very same year, three of Vandegrift's women's team golfers won medalist honors at three different tournaments. Sheehan was named the PSAC Men's Golfer of the Year in 2018.

Vandegrift's work with the women's program is remarkable considering its humble beginnings. Since 2013, he has guided the program to 36 tournament wins. His players have totaled 36 medalist honors since 2010.

In 2007-08, Vandegrift guided the men's team to a second-place finish at the PSAC Championships and a second straight trip to the NCAA East Regional. Vandegrift led the 2006-07 Marauders to a third-place finish in the NCAA East Regional Tournament just two years after capturing the PSAC Championship during the 2004-05 season. Vandegrift saw his 2002-03 golfers win MU's first NCAA Division II East Regional title and second PSAC Championship. Millersville made its first NCAA regional appearance in 2001-02. The Marauders' first PSAC Championship came in 1999. Vandegrift guided the Marauders to the ECAC South Championship in 1995 and 2000.

Under Vandegrift's tutelage, ace Chad Schulze made history in May 2000 by becoming the first Millersville golfer to win a major regional title (NCAA Division II North). Schulze, the 2000 PSAC Golf Athlete of the Year, went on to finish 13th in the NCAA Division II Championships--a milestone unmatched in team history. Schulze was later inducted into the Millersville University Athletics Hall of Fame, and he was joined by former teammate Scott Micklewright two years later.

Vandegrift was honored by the Central Counties Chapter with the prestigious honor of PGA Professional of the Year in 2009. He was inducted into the West Chester University Athletic Hall of Fame in 2013. Vandegrift was recognized by the PGA when he was inducted into the Quarter-Century Club, an honor given to those who have served as head professional at a golf course for at least 25 years.

A Class A member of the Professional Golfers Association, Vandegrift has more than two decades of experience in instruction and course management. He became head professional of Crossgates Golf Club (adjacent to the MU campus) in 1994.

For seven years (1987-94), Vandegrift was employed as golf professional and manager at the Aberdeen (Md.) Proving Ground course. He was cited for outstanding service with the Department of the Army Excellence in Management Award, the Army's highest recognition. In addition, Vandegrift also received the Department of the Army Superior Civilian Service Award for his efforts in implementing and upgrading course and facility improvements at Aberdeen.

Vandegrift also served 10 years as pro and teaching consultant at Tanglewood Manor Golf Club in southern Lancaster County.

A 1974 graduate of West Chester University with a bachelor's degree in business management, Vandegrift was a four-year varsity letterman for the Golden Rams' golf program and was inducted into the West Chester Athletic Hall of Fame in 2013.
