Box Score 2 Lock Haven, Pa. - Friday in PSAC crossover action, the Millersville women's volleyball team ended match losing streaks of 15 and 11 against Edinboro and Slippery Rock, respectively. The Marauders defeated both the Fighting Scots and The Rock in four sets.
Millersville (9-10, 5-6 PSAC) bounced back from a set one loss to defeat Edinboro (13-10, 5-5 PSAC) for the first time since 1995 (21-25, 25-20, 25-19, 25-19). The Marauders then registered a season-high hitting percentage of .286 to defeat Slippery Rock (9-15. 4-7 PSAC) for the first time since 2002 with set scores of 27-29, 25-13, 27-25, and 25-22.
The Fighting Scots posted a .281 hitting percentage to only .069 for the Marauders in the first set. Edinboro sent home 12 kills and committed a meager three errors on 32 total attacks. On the other side, Millersville tallied nine kills to go with seven errors on 29 attack chances. The Fighting Scots took the first set by a score of 25-21.
The Marauders bounced back in set two, though. They only registered six kills to three errors on 21 total attacks but took advantage of Edinboro's miscues. The Fighting Scots committed nine errors to go with nine kills on 36 attack chances. Millersville won the second set 25-20.
Set three was the best of the match for the Marauders as they posted a red-hot hitting percentage of .308. Millersville accumulated 11 kills to three errors on 26 total attacks. The Fighting Scots were again their own worst enemy has they sent home 10 kills with nine errors on 36 attack chances for a hitting percentage of just .028. The Marauders took advantage of those errors to come out on top 25-19.
Millersville wasn't as prolific in the fourth set but still managaed a hitting percentage of .219 to go with eight kills and a lone error on 32 total attacks. Edinboro answered that with an attacking percentage of only .086 with eight kills and five errors. The Marauders came out on top by a score 25-19 to win the match three sets to one.
Katie Lesinski and
Mary Paul each tallied eight kills apiece to lead the offense. Paul also registered a blistering hitting percentage of .636 on 11 attack chances as well as five blocks and four digs.
Jessica Franz aided the offense with 18 assists while
Erika Smith added 12 helpers as well. On defense,
Brooklyn Smith tallied 19 digs and Franz dug 11 attempts. Above the net, Lesinski blocked a career-high seven attacks.
Millersville came out on fire in the first set against Slippery Rock. The Marauders recorded a season-high for kills in a set with 21 and committed six errors on 53 attack chances for a hitting percentage of .283. However, The Rock outlasted Millersville to take the heated first set by a score of 29-27.
Just like in its first match of the day, Millersville fought back nicely in the second set. The Marauders registered a hitting percentage of .238 after they sent home 13 kills with three errors on 42 total attacks. Slippery Rock hit even with six kills and six errors. Millersville took the lopsided set by a score of 25-13.
The Marauders kept up the pressure in the third set after hitting .237 with 14 kills and five errors on 38 attack chances. The Rock responded with a hitting percentage of only .078. Millerville came out on top in another extended set by a score of 27-25.Â
Millersville saved its best for last in the fourth set. The Marauders posted a scorching hitting percentage of .400 with 16 kills and only two errors on 35 total attacks. Slippery Rock had its best set as well hitting .194 but it wasn't enough as Millersville took the set 25-22 and the match three sets to none.
Katie Lesinski again led the attack with 16 kills to only three errors and a hitting percentage of .260.
Rebecca Roman sent home a career-high 15 kills and hit .343 on the match. The final Marauder with double-digit kills was
Mary Paul with 10 and a hitting percentage of .333.
Jessica Franz helped the offense with 25 assists.
Brooklyn Smith registered a career-high 42 digs. Lesinski tallied a career-high 27 digs while
Taylor Smith and Franz accumulated 17 and 16, respectively. Paul and Lesinski led the way above the net with three blocks apiece.
Millersville continues crossover play Saturday in Lock Haven with matches against Mercyhurst (12:30 p.m.) and Gannon (3:30 p.m.).
