MILLERSVILLE, Pa. – The Millersville University volleyball team hosted the Golden Bears from Kutztown University for senior day. The squad celebrated
Caroline Halsey,
Kinsey Reuwer, and
Taylor Welter in their last home match of the season. Set scores were 25-18, 25-23, and 25-18.
Millersville (6-20, 1-11) recorded 26 kills, two aces, 26 assists, and 52 digs while out-blocking Kutztown (13-13, 5-7) by a 6–4 margin.
Taylor Welter,
Caroline Halsey, and
Alex Nava led the attack with six kills each. At the net, Halsey,
Becca Hartranft, and
Sam White each registered two blocks to anchor the defense. In the back court,
Makenzie Muscarello,
Trinity Baldwin, and
Margaux Kellum combined for 25 digs to keep rallies alive.
The Marauders quickly found their rhythm early, jumping out to a 3-1 lead behind points from Halsey, Hartranft, and Kellum. Kutztown responded with steady offense, but Millersville countered with a 5-1 run sparked by a strong kill from
Kinsey Reuwer. The Golden Bears regained momentum, tying the set and trading points through the middle. With the score of 13-12, Kutztown's offense surged on an 8-2 run, and despite Millersville's efforts to rally, the Marauders fell short, dropping the opening set.
Millersville found themselves playing from behind early in the second set as Kutztown opened with five straight points. The teams traded points through a series of errors before the Golden Bears pulled away again with a 6-1 run, extending their lead to 17-10. Down but not out, Halsey and Welter ignited the Marauder offense with a 5-0 surge to cut the deficit to one at 22-23. However, a late service error halted Millersville's comeback attempt, allowing Kutztown to secure the second set 25-23.
Points traded back and forth early as both teams capitalized on errors. Holding a narrow one-point lead, Millersville was overtaken when Kutztown responded with a dominant 9-0 scoring run to pull ahead by seven. Despite efforts from Reuwer and Hartranft to spark a late rally, the Marauders couldn't slow the Golden Bears' momentum and ultimately fell in the final set, dropping the match.
"All three seniors have been the epitome of outstanding student athletes in the classroom, being kind and thoughtful teammates, having a strong work ethic, and excellent characters," said head coach
Brian Smith. "It is always a loss to lose players like that, but thankfully, we have players coming behind them that can take up the mantle.
I have no doubt that all three seniors will have much success in the future, they will be missed and they are loved."
The Marauders will close out their season on the road next weekend, traveling to Lock Haven on Friday, Nov. 14, and Bloomsburg on Saturday, Nov. 15, for a short two-match trip.
