Marauders Drop First Road Game of 2012
9/8/2012 3:03:00 PM | Field Hockey
Indiana, Pa. - The Millersville field hockey team lost its first road game of the 2012 season to the Crimson Hawks of Indiana (Pa.) 2-1 on Saturday afternoon. The game was played almost entirely in a downpour, making it extremely difficult for either team to generate much offense. With this game Millersville has now had four consecutive contests against teams ranked in the nation's top ten.
The Crimson Hawk's Nicloe Bruce scored the games first goal on a breakaway opportunity. Bruce used her speed to get past the Marauder defense and beat goalkeeper Lauren Sotzin putting IUP up 1-0 at the 17:01 mark of the match.
Ten minutes into the second half Millersville forced a penalty corner and used the opportunity to tie the game. Sarah Bomberger played the corner into Rachel Dickinson who fired a shot at the cage. Forward Champayne Hess redirected the shot past IUP goalie Brittany Varacallo for the equalizer.
Bruce and the rest of the IUP team wasted no time in recapturing the lead. Almost three minutes after the Marauders tied the game, Bruce found teammate Ashley Mosner who tapped in the go-ahead goal.
IUP's defense was relentless for the final 20 minutes as they limited the Marauders to just three shots and three corners at the end of the game. With Millersville unable to score again the Crimson Hawks held on in the PSAC crossover match 2-1 on the rain soaked field.
The Marauders outshot the Crimson Hawks 8-6 and also had a 7-4 advantage in penalty corners but it was the combination of IUP keepers Sarah Lemieux and Varacallo who limited Millersvile to only one goal for the second straight game.
Millersville (2-2) looks to get back on the winning track when they host Kutztown on Tuesday, Sept. 11 at 4 p.m. on Chryst Field at Biemsderfer Stadium.
