Shippensburg Squeaks Out Win Over Marauders

Millersville, Pa. – The Millersville field hockey team could not overcome two first half goals by Shippensburg and fell to the Red Raiders 2-1 on Thursday afternoon. The Marauder offense did not come alive until the second half, but it was too little too late after Bre White scored both goals for Shippensburg and handed Millersville their first loss of the season.
The Red Raiders got on the board early when White caused a Millersville turnover in the Marauders defensive third. She proceeded to take the ball the rest of the way, weaving between three defenders and beating keeper Lauren Sotzin. White's goal gave Shippensburg the 1-0 lead only four minutes into the game.
White continued her impressive season start by scoring her seventh goal in three games just 12 minutes later. A deflected pass from teammate Kayla Harshman went right to White's stick, and she lifted the ball into the back of the cage placing the Marauders in a 2-0 deficit for the first time this season.
The rest of the first half involved even play among both teams. At the end of the half Shippensburg led in shots 6-3, but the Marauders had a 4-1 advantage in corners.
The Marauders picked up the intensity in the second frame and controlled most of the play. Sophomore Rachel Dickinson had two great opportunities off of penalty corners but her teammates were unable to get a stick on the ball and get Millersville on the board.
The Marauders forced a penalty corner with 18 minutes to go and this time Dickinson was not to be stopped. She took one touch forward on the corner pass from Brittany Anderson and blasted a shot into the right corner of the goal, placing the Marauders within one.
Millersville continued to increase the offensive flurry by forcing more penalty corners. The Red Raiders thwarted each of those Marauder attempts and outlasted Millersville 2-1 in a battle of PSAC rivals.
The one goal difference was the fourth time in the past five meetings between these teams that the game was decided by only one goal.
The Marauders look to get back on track this Saturday when the play at Indiana (Pa.) at 1 p.m.
