Marauders No Match for Red-Hot Raiders

Shippensburg (4-0, 2-0 PSAC East) has now won eight-straight games dating back to 2011 while Millersville (1-3, 0-2 PSAC East) dropped its third in a row. Since opening the season by scoring 41 points against W.Va. Wesleyan, Millersville has managed just two offensive touchdowns in the last three games.
The Red Raiders boasted the best passing offense in the nation coming into the game, but it leaned on its running attack, racking up 304 yards and averaging a 6.6 yards per rush. Mike Frenette gashed Millersville for 190 yards and two scores on just 13 carries, averaging 14.6 yards per carry. Quarterback Zach Zulli was needed for only three quarters and completed 17-of-28 passes for 222 yards and four touchdowns.
Millersville, meanwhile, totaled 44 rushing yards on 45 carries. Starting quarterback Ted Stachitas played in just two series and running back Myron Myles tallied one carry before both left the game with injuries. That left the Marauder offense in the hands of Sean Quarterman, who led the team in rushing with 33 yards, but was 6-of-21 passing for 62 yards and was sacked four times. Wide receiver Matt Egenrieder was held without a catch for the first time in 19 games.
Shippensburg only needed one offensive play to get on the board. After Frenette returned the opening kickoff 72 yards to the Millersville 23, Zulli connected with Jacob Baskerville for a touchdown.
After Millersville's first offensive possession, senior Jeff Lawson booted the longest punt in school history. From his own 19, he drilled the punt into the Shippensburg endzone, giving him an 81-yard punt, breaking a record that was previously set in 1979.
The punt made little difference, though. Shippensburg scored on a five-play, 80-yard drive that consumed only 1:55 off the clock. Frenette capped the drive with a 54-yard TD run.
One of the few bright spots for Millersville this season has been returner David Coates, and he delivered again Saturday. With Millersville trailing 17-0, Coates took the kickoff 65 yards to the Shippensburg 23. The Millersville offense did little with the drive, though, picking up nine yards before Anthony Kassab converted a 37-yard field goal. Kassab added another field goal in the second quarter, but by that time it was 34-6, and Shippensburg took a 41-6 lead into the half.
Millersville was unable to muster any kind of second half comeback. Cornerback Lou Brown did, however, intercept Zulli, who had thrown only one interception in the first three games. Reggie Slaton added two more tackles for loss to his team-best total of 7.5 this season.
Shippensburg totaled 18 tackles for loss totaling 72 yards. Cody Fleming totaled nine tackles, a sack and 4.5 tackles for loss.
Millersville hosts nationally-ranked Indiana (Pa.) on Saturday, Sept. 29 at 1 p.m.
