Women's Volleyball Drops Two on First Day of Crossover

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Lock Haven, Pa. – The women's volleyball team closed last weekend's tournament with a win at Ursuline College and was hoping to roll that success over into the beginning of PSAC play at the PSAC Crossover at Lock Haven University this weekend. The Marauders, however, got off to a rough start, dropping a pair of matches Friday to Gannon (3-0) and Edinboro (3-1), respectively.

The losses drop the team to 6-6 on the season and 0-2 in PSAC play. The Marauders ran into a buzzsaw in their first match, squaring off with a 9-2 Golden Knights team. Gannon handed Millersville its fifth loss of the season by set scores of 25-17, 25-20 and 25-18.

In the opener, Kayla Wallace paced the offense with seven kills, while Emily Kaledas chipped in six and Katie Lesinski tallied five. Millersville, however, was only able to hit .024 as a team. Another bright for the Marauders was Jessica Franz, as she has been all season long. Franz registered another double-double for the second match in a row with 24 assists and 10 digs. Samantha Booth led the defense with 20 digs.

The Golden Knights proved too strong, hitting .286 as a team while digging out 45 Marauder kill attempts and blocking 12 total attacks. Gannon was led on offense by Lauren Sazama, who finished on 20 kills, and on defense by Emily Carver, who blocked nine total attacks (two solo, seven assists).

On the back end of the day's matches, the Fighting Scots dropped the Marauders to .500 with a 3-1 win. After Edinboro got out to a 1-0 lead with a first-set win of 25-22, Millersville rallied to win set two by a 25-21 score. Unfortunately for the Marauders, the Fighting Scots took over from there, winning the final two sets by scores of 25-12 and 25-21.

Despite the loss, Lesinski was a force at the net for the Marauders, totaling 16 kills on 28 swings, good for a .464 hitting percentage. Millersville's best offensive player was also one of its best defensively, as last year's PSAC East Rookie of the Year had six block assists. Helping Lesinski out on the defensive end was Kaledas, who had seven total blocks (one solo). Kaledas and Wallace also had five kills apiece.

Franz remained strong in the second match, posting her second double-double of the day, assisting on 29 kills and adding 10 digs. The Fighting Scots, however, were able to hit .256 as a team and passed the ball well with 43 assists. Defensively, Edinboro stalled the Millersville attack, digging out 55 attacks and limiting the Marauders to a .124 team average.

Millersville has a quick turnaround, getting back on the floor tomorrow for one more PSAC match at noon before leaving Lock Haven. The team will play Mercyhurst, and hope to improve upon a 3-7 all-time record against the Lakers. The teams met last season and the Marauders got the better of Mercyhurst, coming away with a 3-1 win on Sept. 16, 2011.
