Dively's Game-Winner Lifts Marauders to Upset of No. 3 UMass Lowell

Millersville, Pa. - With zeros on the clock at the end of the first overtime and the score deadlocked at 1-1, Sarah Bomberger took a penalty corner for Millersville, which was trying to complete the upset of No. 3 UMass Lowell. Two crisp passes and one shot later, Marauder players rushed the field to celebrate its 2-1 overtime win against last season's NCAA Division II runner-up.
Bomberger took the return pass off the corner and fired a diagonal pass to the backside post where Kirsten Dively redirected the pass into the back of the cage for the game-winner. The goal came in a man-down situation as Rachel Dickinson was on the sideline with after being tagged with a yellow card. The win improved Millersville to 2-0 and gave them back-to-back wins over nationally-ranked opponents.
It also avenged the 4-3 stroke-off loss from 2011 and was the Marauders first win over the River Hawks in six tries and the first since 1999.
Millersville very nearly ended it a couple of times in the overtime period. With just over four minutes to go, Champayne Hess broke away from the pack and created a scramble near the goal. UMass Lowell keeper Melanie Hopkins managed to punch it away, though. A minute later, Alicia Youtz made some nifty moves to break into the circle. Her shot was also turned away.
Goalkeeper Lauren Sotzin, who played in goal in the 2011 game, made a clutch overtime save as well and finished with five on the day. UMass Lowell narrowly out-shot the Marauders 14-13, but Millersville held a 7-6 edge in penalty corners.
Sophomore Katelyn Zapp gave Millersville an early lead 8:35 into the game when she took a rebound and cranked it right back into the cage. UMass Lowell did not tie it until eight minutes into the second half when Emily Painten scored unassisted.
The 2-0 start is Millersville's first since 1985.
The Marauders look to stay unbeaten on Thursday against PSAC rival Shippensburg. The game is scheduled for a 4 p.m. start.
