Purchase, N.Y. – For the first time since 2008 the Millersville women's lacrosse team opened its season with a 2-0 mark. It did so by defeating Mercy 13-10 Sunday afternoon. The Marauders picked up their first road win and handed the Mavericks their first loss of the year.
Millersville held Mercy, which averaged 19 goals per game entering Sunday's contest, to just five goals in each half. The Marauders' defensive pressure was in full effect as they also limited the Mavericks (3-1) to just 29 shots—10 less than their average.
In her collegiate debut with the Millersville squad, freshman Caitlin Shannon scored a game-high four goals. Senior Kelsey Schmoltze added three goals, and sophomore Ashley Henderson and freshman Kathryn Kehring chipped in two apiece. Brooke Fisher and Mary Houtmann also tallied goals for the Marauders.
Schmoltze netted the first goal less than five minutes in on a man-down possession, but Mercy immediately countered with four unanswered goals. Henderson broke up the Mavericks run—which spanned over seven minutes—when she found the back of the net at the 11:07 mark to notch MU's second score.
Mercy took another three-goal lead with four minutes to play in the first half, but Millersville registered three goals in the final 3:17 to knot the score at five heading into the break. Schmoltze, Shannon and Henderson all scored in the short stretch, and Millersville would not trail for the remainder of the game.
Exploding to a commanding 9-5 lead, the Marauders opened the second period with four-straight unassisted goals from Fisher, Houtmann, Kehring and Schmoltze. Mercy cut the lead to two in a 20-second span but Millersville immediately countered with three more tallies and the Mavericks could not find an answer.
Goalkeeper Courtney Haggerty set aside 13 shots on the day while Mercy's Stephanie DiLegge had 12 saves. Sophomore Amanda Mattera forced a team-high three Maverick turnovers and picked up five ground balls.
Millersville looks to extend its win streak on Tuesday when it open up PSAC play at Lock Haven. Action with the Lady Eagles is slated for 4 p.m. at Charlotte E. Smith Field.
